If we don't do market research, then what? We're not going to offer those voters what the Democrats do - and we wouldn't win them over that way if we tried. What do voters want that we can do differently that would make their lives better? Moving Left is not the answer.

That IS moving Left. We have to stand for something. Compromising our principles is not the way.
That's why we lost the election.
I hate to join the pile-on (no, really, I do...), but you're kidding yourself if you think that there is ANY way that California will ever again vote for anything remotely approaching fiscal conservatism. On a couple of social issues, sure, you'll find some traction, but there is no way to beat the Democrat “free stuff” strategy with this electorate. The winner will always be the highest bidder, period.
Demography really is destiny. The only question left for conservatives is what sort of accommodation you're going to reach with the new reality. Leave? Go John Galt? (Whatever that really means.) Continue to soldier on, knowing the cause is doomed? All are valid, none are all that appealing.
