I agree with the article for the most part, in fact, I was just having a conversation with someone the other day, stating some of these very same sentiments. The author lost me though with the following:

“Huge segments of our population, especially those who live in the embrace of the Christian right and the consumer culture, are completely unmoored from reality. They lack the capacity to search for truth and cope rationally with our mounting social and economic ills. They seek clarity, entertainment and order. They are willing to use force to impose this clarity on others, especially those who do not speak as they speak and think as they think. All the traditional tools of democracies, including dispassionate scientific and historical truth, facts, news and rational debate, are useless instruments in a world that lacks the capacity to use them.”

It seems the author sees the Christian right as the epitomy of the unwashed, idiotic masses. The author is revealing his/her personal bias with the above and it ruins the argument by substituting opinion for objectivity. The author plays into the whole stereotype of the elite liberal who sees anyone who doesn’t have his particular world view as a knuckle dragging, drooling, quasi-violent fool. The lack of self awareness on the part of the author is actually pretty amusing.

Good post, but you mis-spelled “epitome”. Sorry, I am being a jerk.

Well, yes - it isn't the Christian right who eats at fast food restaurants so they can order from a menu with pictures, it's the urban black underclass that Leftist social policy has spent the last 45 years creating. He has diagnosed the general problem accurately, but political correctness is preventing him from correctly identifying the nature of its illiterate victims.

If he had been completely honest, he would have said “the Christian right and the radical left as well as the consumer culture”, but otherwise I can't find a lot of fault with that statement.

I know plenty of Christians that are utterly clueless and refuse to think openly about any number of subjects, not even including religion.

And yes, I’m a Christian too.

quot;“Huge segments of our population, especially those who live in the embrace of the Christian right and the consumer culture...."
My knee jerk..gut reaction to this was the same as yours, but on further evaluation, this is correct as well. I live in an extremely conservative area and we have a nice mix of Protestant, Catholic and Mormon. They do live in a completely different world than I do and it's mostly cut off from trouble and comfortable.

I've worked all over my state, traveled to different locations around the country and I see the problems. They are programed to stay in the flock and they see no need to go out in the field to work on anything. The world could be crumbling around them, you could scream it from the tops of the roofs, yet they would look at you like a robot and say something like, "Trust God". No one wants to work in the field or the battle front to make a difference. Sure...they help out others in their own communities, but we are separating ourselves from the places where the cancer is growing.

What a crock.

Science has gone off the rails completely. The Scientific Method has gone the way of the dinosaur as scientists make predictions about the future (i.e., global warming) and symbolically burn at the stake anyone who disagrees with them.

Science has become just another exercise in religion.
