Oh come now, that's pretty harsh. He actually would have won if it wasn't for MSM and their relentless attacks on both he and Sarah, and the stomach turning worship for that fraud Obama.
Add to that the massive nation wide vote fraud orchestrated by ACORN.
Considering all of that, McCain actually came as close as anyone could have to winning.

He also had the public's extremely low popularity of the Bush admin to overcome.

Blaming McCain for everything is ignoring reality, something you would expect to see from DUer s after Bush won both his terms, not here.

I believe you are giving McCain way too much credit. The MSM has always attacked Republicans viciously. Why was it so significant in this election and not in the prior two Presidential elections?

True, McCain was saddled with Bush's low popularity and an ailing economy. But, he clearly wasn't a Bush disciple and often was a Bush opponent. He failed to use that to his advantage. Rather than use his strength as a budget cutter, he openly embraced a Socialistic financial bailout with Obama. He was a weak campaigner. He lost three consecutive debates. His opponent had a very liberal record and little experience that he failed to exploit. He refused to attack him on Reverend Wright, gun control, Gay marriage, and his lack of experience. McCain looked old, tired and slurred his words. He was a pathetic candidate and lost Indiana, Virginia, and even North Carolina. He ran the worst GOP campaign in my lifetime.
