MIAMI, FL - In a desolate, weed-filled lot in a neighborhood nestled just beyond Miami's glass-and-steel skyscrapers, business was brisk at Earl Quinn's makeshift T-shirt shop. As soon as he could print them, T-shirts with President-elect Barack Obama's name in glitter and his face in silver studs were sold.
Suddenly, this predominantly black community that had suffered for years with poverty, unemployment and racial tension had come to life the day after Obama's historic victory. Customers arrived in pajamas, some still tired after a night of celebrating, just to grab a souvenir.
"You got the one that says, 'It's not a black thing, it's not a white thing, but it's a right thing?"' one customer asked.
Quinn shook his head. Sold out.
"You got the shirt that says 'Mission Possible?' The other day, you were wearing that shirt, 'Mission Possible."'
Quinn grinned.
"It's not 'Mission Possible,"' he said. "It's now 'Mission Accomplished."'
Across the country, black communities large and small -- enclaves that for decades have been plagued with poverty, foreclosures and crushing violence -- are flush with the realization that a black man has done the unplausible. Yet beyond the discussions of hope and change, people say they believe an Obama presidency might bring more concrete relief: jobs, affordable housing and safety.
Jobs and hope have long been scarce commodities in Liberty City. Its name comes from a housing project built in the 1930s for poor African-Americans and is known around Florida for a few things.
One is its high school football team, ranked tops in the country by ESPN last year. Another is grinding poverty. The median household income hovers around $18,000 a year, some $30,000 less than the U.S. average.
It's also known for riots.

This is only a ploy to steal and shoplift and hid their booty. baby strollers make a good shoping cart for stealing.
You’re right, but the Dems will continue to blame their own failures and the worsening economy caused by their own policies on Bush’s “failed economic policies” as they use the failing economy to justify more and more control. They have already planted the seeds for this. In 0bama’s election night speech he said, “we may not be able to solve these problems in one year or even one term”. The Dems are already insulating themselves and setting 0Bama up for reelection even in the face of their own monumental failures. It has all been planned.
Well, it does actually. The whole racists America thing just got diluted. Their argument is now mostly in vain. Wait, I guess that's the sound of a door CLOSING, not opening.
This will be the opportunity for a fiscal conservative to take the helm, slash taxes, eliminate capitol gains robbery, and send Vinny out in the street with his ball bat to collect on all those bailout loans... then sit back and watch things grow. This will give conseratives the foundation back that they have let slip away in recent years.
Could be worse. Could be spandex. Envision stuffing 50lbs of potatoes into a 5 lb sack......
“What I love is seeing babies, toddlers and school age kids up with their parents at 3AM at a Wal-Mart.”
Before my job schedule kept me at work all night, I used to go shopping at that hour. You see some *scary* things in the wee small hours.
LOL! Keep looking!
I disagree. Obammy used the racism argument repeatedly every time he was criticized, even if the criticism wasn't remotely associated with race. The same will happen throughout his administration. The chosen ones election isn't going to dilute racism in this country at all. It's going to promote it. There certainly will be a renewed call for "reparations." Affirmative action, too. Watch closely as it unfolds over the next few months.....
What's the over/under on when the first riots occur when they figure this out? I've got August 2010.
You are exactly right. You have to laugh at all these witless sun-shiney columnists saying that Hussein’s election has put to bed the charges of racism in America. First, if a 95% vote by blacks for a mostly Arab-American black-white guy because he is black isn’t racist, there is no definition of racism. Second, just as you said - the accusation of racism and racist will be raised at every opportunity. It keeps the Obamaniacs riled up, angry and screaming so they don’t use the few brain cells they have to see through the lies that are being fed them. It is going to be a long, difficult 8 years.
Odd, I was back at work by 7AM that morning. Guess someone has to bust their a$$ for their "hope and change".
I live in Savannah, GA and that mentality has already started here. The night of the election “they” celebrated in my mother’s neighborhood by breaking into and stealing cars.
They got around to my neighborhood about a week later. But almost every non-gated subdivision in this city has been victimized.
In broad daylight a woman had her vehicle stolen at gunpoint in a shopping center that specializes in upscale stores like Fresh Market, etc.
If you’re thinking of visiting Savannah be careful. There is rampant street crime (muggings, etc.) but our opportunistic mayor has somehow figured out how to keep it out of the newspaper.
Oh, and said mayor, otis johnson, spends city money to advertise to the local poverty stricken about being sure to apply for their Earned Income Tax Credit every year. Tax dollars at work double dipping style.
Where mah money be?? Ah want mah money!! Barack say ah-mah git me some mo’ money fum da guh-mint.
Just a few months ago 20 million illegal Mexicans all managed to find a job. Even during the boom days, blacks were unwilling to work.
Obama cannot make them all bank Presidents.
Even if he could, half of them have not finished high school and an astonishingly high number of them have no job skills, no experience and many cannot even read.
“Sunday night I saw a show on MSNBC about Jim Jones, and the similarities between his followers and Husseins are striking.”
At least this time we know not to drink the kool-aid.
They’re so delusional, it’s way too much to expect them to understand what’s starting to happen in the economy is going to effect them far more than an Obama presidency-and it will be severely negative.
I wonder if the reporters will roll into their neighborhood then to ask “wha happen?”
...poor guy! The next four years will be fun to watch, but maybe not so much fun for him. HILLARIOUS!".
The misery of the monarch trickles down. Soon we will all be as miserable about being Americans. Let's hope he does well!
I’m not sure of this, but I’m betting to the side that Obama will hire not many more than 10% blacks, and under 33%.
There are many lessons that this community will be able to learn from this. Unfortunately, they won’t. They can’t drop generations of self-victimization cold turkey. Their “leadership” will still lie and tell them that they can’t do it themselves; that they need the government and quotas to covercome their alleged genetic disadvantage.
Democrats have completely destroyed the black community. At the most basic level, they’ve done it be insisting that a separate black community even needs to exist.
Its a shame, really. They high these people are on is going to make the low that will follow that much worse.
They don’t believe that someone who went to Harvard can be a Communist. That’s a “rich person’s school”.
