Black neighbors look to Obama for jobs
WAVY-TV / The Associated Press ^ | November 9, 2008

MIAMI, FL - In a desolate, weed-filled lot in a neighborhood nestled just beyond Miami's glass-and-steel skyscrapers, business was brisk at Earl Quinn's makeshift T-shirt shop. As soon as he could print them, T-shirts with President-elect Barack Obama's name in glitter and his face in silver studs were sold.

Suddenly, this predominantly black community that had suffered for years with poverty, unemployment and racial tension had come to life the day after Obama's historic victory. Customers arrived in pajamas, some still tired after a night of celebrating, just to grab a souvenir.

"You got the one that says, 'It's not a black thing, it's not a white thing, but it's a right thing?"' one customer asked.

Quinn shook his head. Sold out.

"You got the shirt that says 'Mission Possible?' The other day, you were wearing that shirt, 'Mission Possible."'

Quinn grinned.

"It's not 'Mission Possible,"' he said. "It's now 'Mission Accomplished."'

Across the country, black communities large and small -- enclaves that for decades have been plagued with poverty, foreclosures and crushing violence -- are flush with the realization that a black man has done the unplausible. Yet beyond the discussions of hope and change, people say they believe an Obama presidency might bring more concrete relief: jobs, affordable housing and safety.

Jobs and hope have long been scarce commodities in Liberty City. Its name comes from a housing project built in the 1930s for poor African-Americans and is known around Florida for a few things.

One is its high school football team, ranked tops in the country by ESPN last year. Another is grinding poverty. The median household income hovers around $18,000 a year, some $30,000 less than the U.S. average.

It's also known for riots.

I have noticed this, too. It is a good thing. I just wish our first black president weren’t a Communist. These poor people don’t even know what that means. They only know that he’s black and he made it out of the ghetto.

It’s sad, and at the same time a little amusing that so many people are such losers they literally have to have a politician being elected to an office for them to be inspired to do anything.

I have a relative that is like that. He has a dead end job, has never done anything to better himself, and looked to Hussein for making his life better(I shit you not). The night of the election he sent me a text message to rub it in and to say how happy he was. I congratulated him on his improved life by some politician being elected, in the most sarcastic way I could.

Many of these Hussein supporters are juts total losers, if not sick on some level. It’s like a big cult. Sunday night I saw a show on MSNBC about Jim Jones, and the similarities between his followers and Hussein’s are striking. Jones spoke with similar rhetoric too.

They only know that he’s black and he made it out of the ghetto.

And if that's what they "know"...sheesh. Obama wasn't raised in a ghetto, he was raised attending an elite private school in Hawaii after a jaunt to Indonesia. Occidental, Columbia, and Harvard aren't exactly ghettos either.

Exactly my point. Barry had mny more privileges than most of us, black, brown, or white. But all they see is some speech he gave about being raised by his single momma on food stamps and they identify with the guy.

I truly wish I weren't living in such "interesting times." God help us.

If there is anything at all that is positive about Obama being elected, it is the hope that many African Americans quit the habits that have truly kept them down for so long. Unfortunately I don't see this happening, because to truly change would mean breaking with the party that has put anchors around their legs for decades.

When the Republican Party was still the party of Black Americans (all the way up to 1960 where Nixon got fortyfive percent of the BA vote), they made more material progress percentage-wise than any other group of Americans. That changed after 1964 when they were officially made victims and told to wait for government to save them.

If they still believe that Obama is going to shower jobs and other material goods on them, they will be sadly disappointed. The statements made by a number of the people inteviewed in this story show that many of them still have not learned the tragic lesson from the sixties: government is not your personal savior.

"and he made it out of the ghetto."

Someone should disabuse them of that idea. He never made it out of the ghetto because he never lived in one.

"set himself up to fail"

I called a sister the other day to congratulate her on her birthday. A big liberal, she thanked me for Obama's election. I laughed ruefully and told her I would abate my criticisms of The Anointed One until after her birthday. I told her that I want Obama to pay my mortgage and gasoline. She hadn't heard the story about the Obama supporter and asked what I was talking about. When I told her the story, she said oh well, all presidents make promises they can't keep. I going to keep a list of Obama's failed promises and remind her of them for the next four years

My thoughts exactly. These particular Obamabots have no clue. They sure are in for disappointment!

When that pendulum swings back, it’s going to knock over the economy. Like that article said, these places are where riots take place.

He WILL increase their welfare payments, and that will make them happy.

"welfare payments"

You are correct, he might try to do that. In fact, Obama opposed Clinton's welfare reform in the nineties. And he will undoubtedly try to increase the goodies to the presently dependent.

However the great majority of Black people have jobs. It's just that they aren't nearly as high-paying as what they'd like. They want their jobs to be higher remunerative. That is what they're expecting from Obama. Judging from their comments, apparently many of them expect great jobs and more pay to automatically come their way, without any undue effort on their part, thanks to The Grand Distributor. When that doesn't happen, what then?

Maybe they can all work in the new domestic security force, and maybe that will have a generous pay scale.

Maybe he’ll see the light when Obama comes in and ‘redistributes’ some of his new found wealth?
