Remember when Dick Armey called Barney Frank "Barney Fag"? He apologized profusely. I loved every apology because each apology offered another mention of "Barney Fag".
This could be a trick; say something outrageous, get you name in the paper, then apologize to make sure the story has legs. Maybe this is not so conspiratorial but don't think for a minute politicians don't know how to play games.
