Part of the problem is that people can't agree on what constitutes a 'real conservative'. The biggest disagreement seems to revolve around 'social issues', i.e. abortion. But as you probably saw during the recent campaign, there was a great deal of disagreement here on FR as to whether a 'real conservative' would have warred with Saddam Hussein or not.
I think that is a very valid point. FR is a great place for sounding ideas and discussing issues. I am not sure if it is the place that needs to be look to for a definition, though. Personally, I ask, "What do the founding fathers say about it?"
Something that needs to be kept in mind, with any definition, is that the country can not return to its roots in one fell swoop. The real consequences of that course would be disastrous. The movement needs to be based in reality, and look towards changing the country in steps.
