In the face of the economic downturn, retail chains over the past 12 months have been closing stores to cut costs. Here is rundown of what major retailers who operate stores in the Tucson market have done:
Ann Taylor Is closing 117 of its 959 womens clothing stores. By years end the company will have closed 25 Ann Taylor and 39 Loft stores with the remainder to be closed in 2009. The company has an Ann Taylor store in La Encantada and Loft stores in Tucson Mall and Park Place Mall, none of which are among the announced closures.
Bennigans Grill and Tavern All 200 company-owned restaurants were closed as part of a Chapter 7 bankruptcy liquidation filing in July. The single Tucson location, a franchised restaurant at 350 S. Freeway, had closed in June.
Bombay Company Closed all 388 stores in January as part of bankruptcy and liquidation. The chain specializing in imported home furnishings had a store in Tucson Mall.

The Great Depression is beginning its “bite”....
I hated to see Sharper Image close. I used to buy all my groceries there.
Maybe I’m being a little too pessimistic, but I don’t see how our economy is going to recover for a long, long time, and by then, who knows what “recover” will even look like.
Consider that these closings are but a tiny snippet of what is happening all across the nation.
I wonder how many of these stores are going to close for the last time on Dec 31, never to open again. Judging by news reports, sales are way, way down this season.
