Sounds like they knew the collapse was coming, but were trying to keep it under wraps as long as possible - hopefully until after the election. Look at the video of Paulson's press conference today. If you can read body language, you can see that there's stuff he didn't want to fully disclose - like for example, what "facts" changed Mr. Secretary? Now you can only ask why he didn't want to fully disclose those facts.
