Excuse me....”I remeber her from the Reagan years...” was what I meant.

It’s as if a cloud has covered the brain of people we once thought were conservatives.

I...wrote a piece for the Journal declaring the address to be what I thought it was: wild in its ambitions, immature in its thinking, and deeply ahistorical. Now I was treated as the enemy, too.

I remember it well. Ms. Noonan was roundly savaged here on FR for that column.

And guess what, Peggy. It was us, FReepers, savaging you. Independently. Without any coaxing from the Bush administration, by the way.

Because we -- most of us -- disagreed with you. And, even if we thought your premise had merit, we were appalled at your tone: petulant and petty, sneering and spiteful, reeking of sour grapes. No "grace" at all...

I’ve read only one of PN’s books (”What I Saw at the Revolution”), but she’s always had the capacity to wander off the reservation or to express un-conservative or just plain odd ideas.

Unlike those of us who were drawn to Reagan because we were conservative, I think she was drawn to Reagan personally (and she was from a down-the-line Irish Catholic Democrat family background) and then drifted into conservatism. Not really sure how deep the roots went — her attachment was more to a man than the movement.

Perhaps she’s just a Reagan Democrat who’s heading back home, as many of them did starting in 1992.

My own analysis has it that it’s the green room syndrome. Peggy wants to get along, and I remember how years ago she complained about being treated badly in the Noo Yoke society as a Republican. Well, it finally got to her, and she went Stockholm all the way, sitting in the green rooms with the likes of Roseanne, Alec Baldwin, and Bowney Fwank.

I understand, Peggy Noonan has been Obamatized! (you must of been a big fan to write that screed)

I think I got it. Peggy Noonan is terminally neurotic.

It’s probably as simple as that: Bush was more than her lib friends could take. And she then chose a new side.

If you live in New York, you can be a Conservative (a pro-life, low tax low spending party) She chose to be a Republican (basically, a liberal). Her registration explains herself.

Peggy Noonan and Charles Krauthammer should take a hike together — off a cliff somewhere.

“She swoons over a well turned phrase and ignores the thoughts behind them.”

I think you are right in this. She is, ultimately, a wordsmith and judges others on how well they smith words. She believes a president should be high-minded and inspiring to the little people, especially when they use her talents to assist them. But high-mindedness and inspiring presidents are fit for a time of peace and luxury, not for the rough times we’ve had since 2001. We didn’t need someone who speaks eloquently but someone who speaks plainly and backs up what he speaks and that is crass to a wordsmith, like a workman watching me pound a nail with a wrench. Eloquence only works when people want to be inspired and uplifted. The dangerous people in the world today have no such desire and the imprisonment of their own wordsmiths backs this up. Noonan has apparently convinced herself that beautiful acts flow from beautiful words but history shows often the opposite result flows.
