I didn't know that either and hated to read it. As a Catholic myself I am ashamed to read about Kennedy, Kerry, Pelosi, Matthews and all those like them.
They should be excommunicated.

And leaders in the churches they frequent fail to abide by the teachings. They are at fault too. The prestige of having a ‘big important’ person attend is of more value to them.

You’re right. Ted Kennedy is the one who boggles me most of all. The Kennedy’s had a strict Catholic upbringing but he cheated in school and then left Mary Jo to die.
