Even Before Obama, I Already Knew That I Could (Well said!)

Apparently, to almost every member of the media, the election of a thoroughly unaccomplished man to the presidency is a definition of the American dream for the sole reason that he is half black. Even President Bush has said that Barack Obama’s election is a “triumph of the American story.”

The unfortunate truth, however, is that Obama’s election is a tremendous devaluation of the American Dream. It teaches us that the recipe for success is not achievement, but cunning. Yet somehow, everyone has fallen victim to the conventional wisdom that “we now know we can do anything.”

Sherri Shepherd, a black co-host of the TV show The View, summarized the refrain we have heard hundreds of times since November 4: “We’ve always been people of color. We’ve always had these limitations on us . . . And so to look at my son and say no limitations on you . . . to look at my baby and go, you don’t have to have limitations . . .”

Were there really limitations on what her son could do? This dramatic statement is, after all, coming from an immensely successful woman who has better name recognition than north of 99.99 percent of the U.S. population, and a woman who has seen blacks become entertainers, CEOs, astronauts, governors, senators, two successive secretaries of state – everything but presidents (which, as seen in at least the last four elections, is now apparently off-limits to old white men with war wounds).

“Equal rights for the sexes will be achieved when mediocre women occupy high positions.” ___ Francois Giroud

The same can be said of race. It is an achievement of sorts ... like being damned with faint praise.

It’s a good article but you’re suppposed to put the original title of the article, not your own.

Original title is:

I agree with him but there IS something to be said about symbolism at times- and now that the final barrier has been broken (albeit with an incompetant boob) the affirmative action and race-baiting can STOP!!!

(cant it?)

Excellent. Any un-brainwashed and still-thinking foreigner knows that America is synonymous with hope. Except for those brought in chains or already there, just about everybody else went there with matchsticks in their eyes.

And now here’s a president whose ideological and spiritual mentors had people floating on inner tubes in shark-infested waters to flee.

Everybody knew what America meant: hope that if you worked hard and well, you wouldn’t have the stumbling blocks of your old country. If you worked well and hard, you’d be respected.

For foreigners it was as if America had some sort of special discount on the original sin, a born again experience. A decency, a fair deal, a simplicity (which we all know is anything but easy), and even despite all the baloney talk about “evil capitalism” everybody knew that there was a sense of the social that truly was social, because it sprang spontaneously from the people.

And now this Obama is talking about required community work, as if the populace were all guilty of some crime.

I hope you American Conservatives get over the “physiological” bickering stage (inevitable after a lost election) and can gather round not some watered-down compromise, but a new and vibrant leader who has the right mix.

Ibrahim is right. That pampered creature of the worst sort of affirmative action (where gross sins are ignored) has no right in heaven, earth or hell to teach “hope” to the land of hope.

But through the years, an absurd and utterly false message of guilt, insufficiency, negativity, self-loathing was allowed to take hold. An artificial burden, a loss of lightness... based on nothing real - especially if compared to anyplace else.

And like hope, America is the land of Change by default. You DON’T want to change America!! And anyway real change can’t be legislated. Real change happens if you forget about the New Deals, New Frontiers, Great Societies and let the American people work.

This Obama threatens to knock America off the kilter of her contiuum.

Oh pleeeeeezzzzzz, for once one of you people of color tell the truth. You haven’t had any limitations but yourselves for quite a few years now.
