What now, my love? [On the future of conservatism]
WorldNetDaily ^ | November 10, 2008 | David Hanson

The dust has settled. The glow of the stadium lights has faded. Thus concludes the latest season of "American Statist." Wasn't that a warm and fuzzy ending? I kind of liked the part when the liberal neoconservatives who hijacked the Republican Party were totally repudiated. No longer able to feed at the Beltway trough, many of them are now out of work. I hear Russia's hiring.

No one can deny the beauty of the narrative that sees a young African-American winning the presidency. However, the philosophy of liberty compels that we ultimately see things in a colorblind manner. After all, the Obama administration's definition lies not in its race, creed, age or gender. Rather, it rests in the actions of an individual. We in the liberty movement will certainly be watching – and working.

But what of the Republican Party? Perhaps I can caution a suggestion worthy of consideration. Republicans must reject any return of liberal neoconservatism that has so entrenched itself in the collective cogs of the party machine. Whatever dangers an Obama presidency may pose to our liberty can be directly laid at the feet of this totally discredited false-conservative philosophy.

WND opinion piece by 19-year-old writer on the future of conservatism. I don't know if everyone will agree with it, but I found it interesting.

I think that if we ever want to bring about a true land of liberty, we need a radical re-envisioning of our movement. We must start thinking outside the box.

One of our problems is that so many of these issues require sophisticated analytical thought. And, we have a WHOLE lot of very dumb sheeple types in America...and they can vote.

We have the thoughtful and well educated...and then we have the ones who want shiney new stuff.....+no war+ a “clean” planet. All of this was promised by the other guy.....while we were being the “parents”.

Obviously, “community organizers” deal with these people all the time....and he knew it....and he sold it....while we stood around trying to keep them from partying after the prom.

I could agree with that, I defiantly see that's what is needed to reform the RINO’s, but the one thing we don't need restraint in is telling the truth, LOUDLY. We need to shout it from the rooftops if we have too (and avoid wearing a tinfoil hat while doing it, cause people are sure going to be looking for one for a bit when you first do).

“One of our problems is that so many of these issues require sophisticated analytical thought.”

In talking with my young kids they sometimes have a very liberal viewpoint of things. Take fairness - it is good to be fair. Of course when I go deeper and give the example of taking a high grade from them to give to a D- student so everyone can be average - then they understand it. Of course the next question I had for them was “So - if you know you’re going to get an average grade no matter what - will you work hard or watch TV?” Watch TV of course. “But, if EVERYONE watches TV....”, etc.

I thought I had done a better job with my older son with regards to guns. He didn’t see why we need to have “Assualt Weapons” (his mind was thinking of hunting, perhaps self-defense). I explained to him that it wasn’t about hunting, it was about fighting an oppresive government. (And also how pump shotguns are considered “assult weapons” by some.)

Neither of these discussions required too much on “sophisticated analytical thought” - perhaps a few minutes on each subject, just to look at the possible ramifications (common sense to me).

I think one way Republicans could have won in foreign policy would have been to focus on going after Bin Laden and Al Qaeda in Afghanistan, while at the same time moving towards a non-interventionist foreign policy on a broader scale (why do we still have bases in Germany, for example?) Two-thirds of our budget is overseas spending and much of it is totally unnecessary. We should have also gone after Al Qaeda more with intelligence and special forces, rather than a standing army like it's WWII. There was some of that, but it was spotty and unfocused.

As for a clean planet, people are going to have to learn that voluntary lifestyle choices and the protection of property rights are the best ways to be stewards of creation, not government fiat and bureaucracy.

” . . it’s the fault of fraudulent, morally bankrupt Republican leadership.”

I don’t know what else you could call the GOP “brain-trust” that lost, then tried to blame the loss on the only reason they didn’t suffer an embarrassing Mondale-type debacle: conservative Sarah Palin.

Now is the time to begin separating the sheep from the goats.

I agree and have had the same experience with my children and grandchildren....but for the most part...it’s not working on the average American citizen. How do we educate the masses? How do we get them to think long-term...most will WANT the government to take care of their retirement...so absorbing 401ks will seem just fine to them. Most think it’s the Mothers “choice” to have an abortion...so it’s just fine with them...most think clean air should be the goal...so “Cap & Trade” is just a necessary thing.

I don’t know how to stop the tide of the “me-first” generation.

The neat thing is, however, that now Obama is the ‘parent.’ I look forward to watching him hold the line and be on the receiving end.
