According to a 11/27/80 NYT story, "Bernardine Dohrn Reportedly Seen on West Side," (NYT Archives), Ayers and Dohrn moved to NYC sometime in 1978, renting an apartment at 520 W 123rd in December, 1979, using the names Christine Louise Douglas and Anthony J. Lee. Their 2nd child, Malik Cochise Dohrn was born there on Feb. 1, 1980. They gave their previous address as a studio apartment at 457 W 46th, and told acquaintances they had moved to NYC from San Francisco.

During those years, Dohrn worked as a part-time waitress at a restaurant/bar named "Teachers," and from September 1979 until shortly before the birth of Malik on 2/1/80, at a baby boutique, Broadway Baby, 2244 Broadway, near 82nd St.

Ayers first worked as a baker at The Bread Shop, a health food bakery at Broadway and LaSalle Street, before going to work as a teacher at BJs Kids, a day care center in PS 9, 100 W. 84th Street, which his kids attended.

After pre-paying three months rent on their apartment, on or around Nov. 13, 1980, Ayers and Dohrn packed up the kids and "drove off in a blue station wagon," telling their employers they had to return to Chicago because of an illness in the family.

On December 3, 1980, Ayers and Dohrn surrendered to IL state authorities in Chicago on a plea bargain presumed to have been negotiated in advance. Due to prosecutorial misconduct, charges against Ayers were dismissed, while Dohrn received probation and a fine for crimes committed during the "Days of Rage" in Chicago in '69.

Sometime after Dec. 3, 1980,  they returned to NYC. Although they presumably intended (three months advance rent before they left) taking up residence again in the apartment on W 123rd, it's questionable that they returned there after the publicity engendered by the 11/80 NYT story printed in their absence. Ayers was listed at 243 W 15th St in the 1981 Manhattan telephone directory (that info taken from an online post, and not verified).

Ayers began studying for his Master's in Early Childhood Ed. at Banks Street College of Ed. in 1982, and graduated in 1984. He earned both his M. Ed. and Ed.D from the Teachers College of Columbia U. in 1987.

Dohrn refused to cooperate with the grand jury investigating the 1981 Brinks Robbery, and was jailed for contempt in a NYC federal prison in May 1982. She was released in December, 1982, at which time she married Ayers -- probably for the purpose of adopting Chesa Boudin, son of Cathy Boudin and David Gilbert, both of whom were convicted and jailed for the robbery, which took the lives of two policemen and a Brinks guard.("Behind the Brinks Case: Return of the Radical Left," NYT, 2/16/82; "Bernardine Dohrn Freed by Judge," NYT, Jan. 6, 1983 -- NYT Archives).

Dohrn went to work at the NY office of Sidley & Austin in 1984. She passed the NY Bar exam the same year, but was refused admission to the Bar due to her jail sentence and "contempt" expressed in refusing to comply with the Federal Grand Jury's request.

Ayers, Dohrn and their three sons returned to Chicago in 1987.

Keep in mind that telephone directory listings, especially for NYC apartments, are notoriously inaccurate. The NYT is also ignoring the following from a 5/15/08 AP story about  Obama's Pakistani roommate Sohale Siddiqi (interviewed once only):

"The Obama campaign declined to discuss Obama's time at Columbia and his friendships in general. It won't, for example, release his transcript or name his friends. It did, however, list five locations where Obama lived during his four years here: three on Manhattan's Upper West Side and two in Brooklyn - one in Park Slope, the other in Brooklyn Heights. His memoir mentions two others on Manhattan's Upper East Side."

Also, in "Dreams," Obama describes his first sublet apartment, which he couldn't get into upon arrival in August '81 (and so slept in the alley with a chicken) as located near 109th and Amsterdam on the Upper West Side. As usual, it's unclear how long he stayed there before moving in with Saddiqi on the Upper East Side, or how long he stayed at E. 94th, although he's listed at that address in the '82 and '83 NYC directories.

Barack Obama: everywhere and nowhere in NYC.

No one else gets such deals in advance. Bill Ayers father lined up this sweetheart “prosecution” of the two. Used his influence and hired the right connected lawyers

Ayers went to Bank St School of Education. This place is across the street from Columbia University. Obama and Ayers lived close by
Their schools were close by
They were both leftists
They could have moved in the same circles

My guess is 0 was acquainted with Ayers but not a friend.
0bammy would have stood out
As a mixed race Columbia U student

I say more knew him or were acquainted during 0’s Colombia years but ain’t talking
