In Indonesia, thousands of sympathisers have attended the funerals of the three men executed by firing squad on Saturday for the 2002 Bali bombings. Mourners who attended the funerals of the brothers Amrozi and Mukhlas in Tenggulun in East Java paid tribute to them as martyrs. Although there were brief clashes between bystanders and police, for the most part the event passed off peacefully. The third bomber, Imam Samudra, was buried in West Java in a ceremony open only to his family.

Put the shoe on the other foot, and the bizarrity comes into focus:
3 US men bomb a local mosque; muslims are known to congregate there, and scores are killed. The police arrest the men, but are later shown on US T.V. jovially chatting and joking with the cuffed men in the station; all appear overjoyed.
Because of legal formalities, the perps are in fact tried. Much later, they are executed for bombing the mosque.
At the funeral, thousands of Americans show up, crying for the departed souls of the bombers.
