Her father and McCarthy were very close (the father was a GOP campaign strategist, helped knock out the incumbent “Young Bob” La Follette, Jr. in the ‘46 GOP Senate primary) and JM lived with the Van Susterens in Appleton when the Senate was in adjournment. It wasn’t something she went around broadcasting, and like so many children of respectable Republican households of the time, went moonbat (probably through college indoctrination) in the ‘60s and ‘70s in rebelling against them. The sister tried to run for the Senate in Maryland (another lib Dem).
