3 liberals and 1 Rino who work for me will get their walking papers at the end of this month. They will get the word the day after Thanksgiving. I have no plans on replacing them. Business is down 60% from 1 year ago. The time to fire is now. Dont wait until after The One takes his throne.

I guess I'm lucky, I don't have employees though I do have to worry about staying in business.

It can't be easy letting people go.

I know you’re doing this because business is down, but it makes me happy and I sincerely hope the best for your business in this terrible time for capitolists to come.

Is the American dream dead?

I have a small business with no employees. I farm out work on elance and similar sites now and then, usually using some folks in Minnesota and Washington to do work now and then.

I was prepared in the event of an Obama victory. That work usually totals about $20-24,000 a year. I will farm it out to some students in Eastern Europe somewhere, who will get it done for 1/4 to 1/3 of that price. I may have to check the work more closely, but the difference in quality is 99% for the domestic work, and 97% or so for offshore work. Its worth it for me.

I won’t fire them, though. Usually around Christmas I get a card from them, and then an email in early January talking about an increase in rates. this time, I’ll just tell them in January that I’m priced out, wish them luck, and take my ball elsewhere. I suspect I’m not the only one who will cut back on the domestic freelancers. They will probably be taking a solid hit.

I also have ICs who work for commission, and what I will do is I’ll cut their commissions down from 20% to 15 right away, and then down to 10% in Fall, 2009 at the start of my new season.

I am a life-long bookkeeper.
I am advising anyone who will listen to me to cut back your operations—cut them WAAAAY back. If you get down to the original Mom-Pop, then so be it.
If you must have a third employee- sell them a very minimum of stock- 5%-stock in your company for a minimum value. Then they are no longer an EMPLOYEE—they are an owner.
Talk to a lawyer/CPA for guidance.
Get down to the original core business you started with. DO NOT support the tax increases and other rules/regulations that will cripple your operations.
Every rule/reg is followed by an “inspector” from the Govnm’t seeing to it that you follow their “rules”.
You never get a clean bill of health from them. Always a bad review, a fine or a non-compliance write up.
Get yourself into bunker mentality and stay there until this can be reversed.
