World waits to see Barack's true colours
The Australian ^ | November 06, 2008 | Greg Sheridan

SO now we know for sure. The Noam Chomsky-John Pilger-Phillip Adams view of America is wrong. In George W. Bush's America, a land allegedly rife with militarism and racism, the white military hero lost and the black memoirist won a slashing election victory.

In a nation supposedly enthralled by fundamentalist religion, the presidential ticket with two mainstream, Protestant, capital-C Christians lost to the ticket with a vice-president of Catholic background who favours abortion on demand, and a presidential candidate who drifted into religion when he drifted into politics and who has one of the most pro-abortion records of any legislator.

In a sense all of this is beside the point. These were not the issues on which this election was fought.

Nor are they the dynamics of American society.

It is indeed a wonderful thing for the US to have its first black president. No African-American child need ever fear there is any limit to what they can achieve. Whatever you think of Obama's policies and capacity to govern well -- and I have my doubts -- his election is a powerful symbol of America's inclusiveness and opportunity. Which other big, rich, predominantly white society has elected a member of a racial minority to be its head of government? Not Australia.

So as we salute Obama, let's salute America as well.

The left liberal caricature of America was always nonsense. The militarism of American society is vastly overstated, just as its profound willingness to make sacrifice for other people's freedom is under-appreciated. This is the fifth presidential election in a row in which the candidate with the stronger military record lost to the candidate who didn't serve, or served only in the National Guard.

The last war hero to be elected president was George H. W. Bush in 1988. The...

well not so fast...Tavis Smiley, Al Sharpton and others say we still are.

Nevermind there truly IS no higher pinnacle to reach...Al Sharpton even said it’s insulting for us to be so naive to assume his work is finished!

surreal.

Wasn’t her outfit awful and running around during campaign trying to be Beaver Cleaver’s mother was a joke. Whoever did her makeover(didn’t they say she was having a makeover)is a joke.

I’ve got news for Mister Sheridan. The America-bashers will only take a short respite before they find more reasons to hate America again. This is just a temporary set-back for them. Of course if Obama continues with his plan to turn the U.S. into a vassal state of socialist Europe and ban capitalism and disband the military, then they will truly love us.

I have even heard some of those enslavers insinuate that, you know, Barack isn’t “black” enough . . .

However.

Of course Jesse and Al and Jeremiah will keep on trying to make a buck off of misery and preaching hate and telling folks they have no choice but to stay on their inner city (physical) and white-race-hating (virtual) plantations. But I still believe that at some point more and more of our fellow Americans are going to say “Do I believe Jesse or my lyin’ eyes?”

This will be especially true of the blacks who already do or are poised to take advantage of America’s constant socioeconomic mobility, but whom did not think of themselves as completely free to pursue the American Dream.

The ironic thing is that, as they *accept* the truth that they can succeed if they are willing and able, many will also come to realize that Barack Obama is part and parcel with the old racemonger-enslavers.

Yup, the reality is he has perhaps unwittingly crushed forever the argument about “the man”. He IS the man now.

And everytime Jacks-nnn, or Sharpton or anyone brings their race-baiting screed up, my hope is people will want to move forward, put an end to it once and for all and answer them:

Ummm, there IS nowhere higher, no way more further and nowhere else TO go!

I mean truly the only place left is reparations and such a thing is ridiculous and has no hope of success.

Oprah Winfrey, Tiger Woods...astronauts...and now the most powerful human being in the world, POTUS.

If anything, they need to sit down and be reminded there are other minorities and women! They had their turn, they won and no one will pay attention to them anymore.

But I think you’re right, even Harry Belafonte seemed to say it’s over. And I think it’s telling when a young football player from the broncos gets it and wanted to pull on a black and white glove proud that the collective country has finally moved as far forward as it possibly can!
