Baseless optimism, I’d call it. A contracting economy is just what the American left loves: Obama has already tipped his hand that he wants all kinds of Federally funded infrastructure projects and to organize all kinds of civilian this-that-or-the-other-thing corps. (Not just his ominous ‘civilian national security corps’.) He wants to play FDR, and this time plans to do the full fascist treatment the Supremes stopped the original from going through with.
Maybe we’ll luck out and Karl Marx will be right about one thing, and when history repeats itself it will be farce the second time around. Of course given Marx’s track record. . .

Whole different ballgame
FDR did not have a national debt in the stratosphere to begin with and people didn't have credit card debt up the wazoo cause there weren't any and there wasn't a whole welfare generation in existence
