Road Still Leads Back To Reagan In Republicans' Latest Soul Search

As Obamaniacs whoop it up, the Right is undergoing the same self-examination it went through starting in 1977. Some decisions will be easy, others less so.

Few will claim that "big government Republicanism" — or, as Goldwater referred to it, a "Dime Store New Deal" — is the wave of the future. Conservatives know that competing for the affection of voters by leasing their souls to corrupt lobbyists has been a fool's errand. Within days will come a restatement of minimalist government principles, especially by the economic right.

The reps need to also reach out and explain themselves in clear detail to the generations X and Y.

If they take the tack of straight shooting and saying why the dems are full of BS and how much these “free” programs are going to cost them, they will do better.

Right now they are just giving the dems a free run at the younger generations w/o a fight.

And the older gens are dying off.

Gotta pass the facts along.

IBD is a shill-rag for corrupt corporate lobbyists.

This is the pot calling the kettle black.

It would be nice if we had a modern day Milton Friedman to do that. I review his “Free to Choose” series some times. The principles apply as well now as they did then, but the examples he points out are a little out of date since Reagan and the Gingrich congress took care a many of them.

Forget these stupid old paradigms.
Reagan could win by taking Dem voters but that’s not the only way.

The winner of the most possible votes this year wasn’t McCain OR Obama. IT was NOBODY! AGAIN!

Most people didn’t vote- most of them didn’t even register.

Find out what would make them vote!!!!!!!!!!!!!

“but the examples he points out are a little out of date since Reagan and the Gingrich congress took care a many of them.”

But the out of date stuff is what is being taught/told etc to the youngers.

If the conservatives want to live, they have to reach out and adapt.

Right now we are portrayed as white christian homo haters who’d rather molest kids at church or attack some minority than eat our red meat dinners.

I’m one of the Gen-x generation. Ronald Reagan was the master of putting foot-to-ass for his country, and expected the same of his fellow countrymen. A true leader with America’s best interests at heart.

What does reach out and adapt mean, exactly? Look more like democrats and basically toss conservatism under the bus?

Maybe I don’t understand this because I’m more of a Reagan conservative with a libertarian stripe, not necessarily a social conservative. In that light, Friedman is still quite relevent to today’s world.

I’ll probably be flamed for this one, but I think that in some respects we took social conservatisim too far, and perhaps that’s why people look at ‘conservatives’ as... what you said:

“Right now we are portrayed as white christian homo haters who’d rather molest kids at church or attack some minority than eat our red meat dinners.”

Ronald Reagan
CPAC - March 01, 1975

...
A political party cannot be all things to all people. It must represent certain fundamental beliefs which must not be compromised to political expediency, or simply to swell its numbers.

I do not believe I have proposed anything that is contrary to what has been considered Republican principle. It is at the same time the very basis of conservatism. It is time to reassert that principle and raise it to full view. And if there are those who cannot subscribe to these principles, then let them go their way.

Timeless truths are just that - timeless.
