“Personal Responsibility” comes to mind. My Dad owned a bank in 1929. His partner skipped out (democrap, no doubt) and my Dad spent most of the rest of his life paying back every single depositor – something he had no ‘legal’ obligation to do. He also sent money every month to his parents and completely supported my maternal grandmother who spent the last 5 years of her life in a hospital. There were no government programs and you can bet my Dad would not have taken any ‘free’ money anyway. We obviously had less, but he managed to give us a wonderful life and scraped together the money to help me through college – there were no student loans (which he certainly would not have approved of anyway) – kids worked in jobs that today are done by illegal immigrants because “Americans don’t want to do them”.
