LOS ANGELES (AP) _ It could be days or weeks before a winner is declared in the 4th Congressional District, a longtime conservative stronghold in Northern California where fewer than 500 votes separated the candidates Wednesday.
Elsewhere, the Obama wave that swept California failed to flip any GOP-held congressional seats into Democratic hands on Election Day. Republican incumbents held on, though some with narrower margins than usual.
So Democrats' desire to grow their 34-19 majority in California's House delegation and pile onto their expanded majorities in Washington hung on the outcome in the 4th district. Democrat Charlie Brown, a retired Air Force lieutenant colonel, was in a dead heat there with Republican Tom McClintock, a state senator from Southern California's Thousand Oaks area.
McClintock led Brown by 451 votes out of 311,091 cast, according to early results from the secretary of state Wednesday. Up to 40,000 or more provisional and absentee ballots remained to be counted.

Another true conservative that the GOP refuses to help.
AMEN!
Mrs. Hugin and myself were two votes for Tom. I hope they look over those provisional ballots very, very carefully.
Talk to the locals. It is worse than that.
It is alleged that the local Central Committee actively worked to hamstring McClintock, seeing him as a carpet bagger, although no local residency is required in congressional races.
I’m still disappointed that Arnold and his ego didn’t drop out in the 2003 recall. McClintock would have won.
I hope Tom pulls this off because Charlie Brown is the biggest phony. I’ve was getting misleading mailings daily from this fraud. Never said he was Democrat. Always emphasizing his military service and trying to imply he was a conservative when he is an extreme liberal. I’m a little worried because I heard some of the votes not counted are from Nevada County which has been severly infected with the liberal cancer of bay area transplants. My county (Placer) has also been inflicted but not as bad. Even 10 years ago Tom would have won 90% to 10%.
Prayers for Mac...
Not true. The Placer County Central Committee endorsed him in the primary in the face of furious opposition from local elected officials who preferred the country club RINO Doug Ose. They alone were there for him when he needed them most. The Placer County Chairman Tom Hudson has been a die hard McClintock follower along with me since all three of us were young activists in Southern California in the 80s and 90s.
Tom won’t “play ball” for local pork projects...
If he pulls this out, he had best move in the district for real and come back every weekend. He had more or less abandoned his Thousand Oaks district long ago..
Thank you for the correction.
What was the outcome?
