SAN FRANCISCO -- Democrats across California looking to leverage President-elect Barack Obama's popularity into historic gains in Congress and the state Legislature seemed likely to fall well short of their goals.
Democrats had targeted six congressional seats throughout the state held by Republicans. Winning those races would have given Democrats 40 of the state's 53 seats in Congress - unprecedented success since redistricting in 2000 virtually guaranteed both parties safety in districts they held.
But partial returns late Tuesday showed Republicans with commanding leads in five of those races, with the sixth contest nearly a dead heat separated by less than 200 votes.
"Gerrymandering works," said Jack Pitney, a political science professor at Claremont McKenna College. "This is what happens when politicians pick their voters, instead of the other way around."

Thank God for something positive in Kalifornia government.....there is not much.
The McClintock/Brown race remains undecided.
McClintock up by 400+ votes with 100% counted. Only late absentee votes still left.
Looks like Tom wins!!!
So I had at least one piece of good news to cling to bitterly this morning!!!
In other news, the world's two most powerful cities, Washington DC and Sacramento CA are now headed for African-American titular leadership! What a joy this will be!! Affirmative action can now be ended and talk of reparations as well!!!/s
So I take it Duncan Hinter’s son retained that seat?
Drudge and Novak has this..
NOVAK: No mandate for Obama, no lopsided Congress...

re: Congre$$ and Obama’s coattails effect
DEMS +17 HOUSE...
DEMS +5 SENATE...
It could have been a lot worse with Hillary running, imo.
Oooops......Hinter = Hunter ;o)
There were no coat tails because most of the fraudulent ACORN voters were for president only. This way if they mixed them up and sent some Ohio votes to Indiana they might have gotten caught. Of course they didn’t know getting caught would be no big deal.
We had an open seat for Congress in our district. When McCain and Palin came through, they had the republican candidate as part of the intro team. Obama and Biden? Nope, no time for the democrat running to participate.
Good...and prop 8 seems to have passed...
