Sarah Palin could wind up in Washington serving with John McCain after all -- in the U.S. Senate.
Here's the scenario making the rounds of arch-conservative groups strongly in the Palin camp:
After their expected loss today, Palin goes back to being governor of Alaska and McCain remains a U.S. Senator (his term ends in 2011).
But Ted Stevens, the Alaskan Republican senator convicted recently of corruption, is still up for re-election as of today.
Here's where Palin and the Senate come in:
If Stevens wins, he could either step down on his own (unlikely, given his pugnacious personality) or the U.S. Senate could expel him in 2009.
Then, Alaska would hold an election to choose a new senator.
And, in this version at least, the oh-so-popular Palin would run and win a seat in the U.S. Senate

I love Mark Steyn. Even if you weren’t financially-challenged, it’s already sold out. I think they’d make room for Sarah though. :-)
“That cruise looks fun ... Fred Thompson and Mark Steyn! Alas, Im too poor. Oh well, Obamas gonna pay for my mortgage at least ;)”
Yes Oprah says for the first time in our lives everything will now be perfect.
And Putin thinks so too.
Sarah has the base locked down, which is most of the vote in the GOP primaries. So all she needs to do is convince a few ‘mavericks’ to come over to her side and she wins
I agree. Going there would take away one of her stongest points -- being a Washington outsider. One day, down the road, if her chances for VP or President never come to pass, then she could consider it.
Would be fine by me as well. I don’t care if she doesn’t bother to show up to 1 Senate session, it would give her a national podium on which to set herself up to run in 2012.
All she’d do for 2-3 years is vote “No” to stupid democrat legislation anyway and highlight their corruption. All in all, not bad a bad thing in preparing to run in 2012.
Does anybody really care about Noonan, Will, Frum, etc.? I truly don’t and I’m ballsy enough to say I don’t think outside their own circles anybody else does either!
(hugs)
Want to move to a nice vividly red state so I can be with my peeps.
I respect Governors more than Senators who are usually on both sides of every issue.
fixing tagline
No, If he steps down which I expect he will do the governor appoints his replacement. Gov Palin could appoint herself if she wants to.
I'm torn between that and her placating her foes with Washington experience. Of course, it's all a crock anyway. Any stick will do to beat a horse.
Godspeed Sarah! We conservatives are behind you 100%.
Very good point.
Has Sarah made any post-loss speeches or comments?
“A Palin book sounds like a great idea!”
I agree. She should start with a book for children “Good Night Moose”
And Putin thinks so too."
And so does Ahmadinejad.
Being a US Senator is a different but very important role, especially with Democrat majorities in both houses. True conservatives are rare in the Senate. It seems as if most politicians sell their souls before reaching the US Senate. We are going to need as many strong conservatives as we can get to fight Obama's judicial appointments, and to prevent the Senate from approving bad treaties that the Obama administration seeks to have us enter into.
She's a wonderful asset no matter where she ends up.
She and Todd looked sooooo disappointed. I think that's the first time I've seen Todd not smiling. I still think it's a shame that Sarah wasn't used better to get the female vote.
I like Sarah Palin..ALOT...but she has too much of a populist streak for my tastes at this moment.
I am going out on a limb here and say right now, that Bobby Jindal is at the top of my list for 2012. Maybe Sarah can run as his VP pick. She has certainly been ‘vetted’ by the media...(eye roll)
I think Palin has been “Quayled.”
Jindal is our best hope.
