Early reports are indicating that the youngest members of the country's electorate voted Tuesday in higher numbers than in the last presidential election and they voted more Democratic. Youth turnout appears to be exceeding 2004 levels, which was itself a year with a big surge in voters ages 18 to 29.
We expected record turnout, and that is what were seeing right now, says Heather Smith, a spokeswoman for Rock the Vote, an organization that works to encourage young people to register and vote in every election.
Whats more, young voters may prove to have been the key to Barack Obama's victory. Young voters preferred Obama over John McCain by 68 to 30 percent the highest share of the youth vote obtained by any candidate since exit polls began reporting results by age in 1976, according to CIRCLE, a non-partisan organization which promotes research on the political engagement of Americans between ages 15 and 25.

The GOPers stayed home.
Well, the Republicans ran a freaking DINOSAUR!
The youth voted the way they have been EDUCATED to vote.
Enough said.

Why wouldn’t they like him he was promising free stuff. Everyone likes free stuff don’t they?
Fact is the Dems have expanded their base. They have the blacks, the youth and now the hispanics.
Yep...they fell for the media crap.
It was nice pinging back and forth with you throughout the whole ordeal though. Hope you keep me on the list. :)
What is ironic about this is that THEY are the ones who will pay in the long run for everything their Wonder boy is about to do to this country. It’s called shooting yourself in the foot.
same here. I hope we survive.
They say this EVERY year election year, and when it’s all said and done and the numbers come in, it’s not true.
Youth vote will be up slightly, but this race was not won by college kids..get real.
Let them eat pie.
Mac did everything he could to alienate the youth vote with the exception to scream at them to keep off his lawn.
So the gimme generation put us in this mess. Figures!
Young White females in particular. The Hiphop has a little something to do with his popularity among youth.
Of course, running a 200 year old man didn’t help. Romney would have scored more votes among the youth.
I’m not a big Romney fan, but he would have at least looked like Obama’s equal in terms of appearance. Looks are important in politics, that’s reality.
Well said.
All isn’t lost yet. We’re gonna take some hits for sure, but hopefully we can weather the storm and come out stronger.

I think should shouldn’t be able to vote unless you either pay taxes or are in the military.
The youth vote is crap. Most of those people have no idea what they are really voting for. They are being influenced(manipulated) by the media and pop-culture in general.
Parents, I can’t say it often enough: GET YOUR KIDS OUT OF THE GOVERNMENT SCHOOLS!
