You can read the first few pages of Ayer's Fugitive Days online at Amazon.com. It's not a very impressive work. Any number of people could have turned out something as good or better. Also, Ayers comes across as more simplistic in his view of the Sixties than Obama does.

These theories might make some sense if Ayers had written his memoir first and it established a reputation for him in that field. But Obama's memoir came out years before Ayers's did. Whether or not Obama wrote Dreams himself, he wouldn't have had much reason to pick Ayers to ghost it when there would have been other possible candidates.

Ayers has been writing about a book a year since 1989 [and that's not counting all the old Weather Underground literature].

We only used the stuff from the early 1990s.

I have a history of caring about statistics and randomness, correlation functions and stuff like that - but I'm afraid I need a scorecard to keep this stuff that you are presenting straight. What precisely do you mean by purple - the idea that Ayers and Obama are one and the same? You are saying by that, that you are testing how similar their styles are when comparing a known Obama work with a known Ayers work? Is that a measure of the difficulty of detecting the difference between Obama's work and Ayers' work if you don't assume but take as a question the authorship of "Dreams?"
