Election fever is sweeping across America with the highest turnout in a century expected in today's presidential election. People began queuing to cast their votes before 5am and voters are being warned that they may have to wait for more than two hours to cast their ballots. The unprecedented queues formed despite heavy rain in many areas on the east coast. Officials are anticipating a record turnout of between 130 million and 140 million people following the longest and most expensive campaign for the White House in the country's history. Barack Obama is said to have one million people out campaigning for him today persuading people to turn out and vote. Millions of his supporters received personalized emails from Mr Obama and his wife overnight encouraging them to "make sure everyone you know votes." "The opportunity to set our country on a new path has never felt more real than it does right now," said Michelle Obama. About 65 per cent of Americans are expected to vote today – the highest turnout since 1908. Most states have allowed workers time off work to cast their ballots. Starbucks is offering free coffee to those voting and other retailers are also offering incentives amid election scenes not seen in a generation since the election of John F Kennedy. The Dow Jones stockmarket index also opened sharply higher, up more than 200 points by mid morning. About 30 million Americans have already cast their ballots in early voting before election day, with queues lasting several hours reported in many locations. The contest will make history whoever wins. America will either elect the first black president or the first female vice president.

I live just 5 minutes from Boston and my polling place was DEAD. No line at all. Only took me 5 minutes to vote.
When in other countries I have been embarrassed when people ask me why so few Americans vote. After today all Americans can be proud of their setting a record for voter turnout.

On other threads I am reading that GOP turnout is through the roof!
This is good because it can be shown with raw data the democrap turnout is relatively constant. They get the same percentage no matter what they do.

Even if you live in a ‘Blue’(Dem.) state- because you still can get Republicans into your LOCAL govt. positions!!!!!
There may have been 30-50 people at my polling place in Fresno, CA, at 7:30 a.m., but I waited only about 1 minute before I got my ballot.
My compliments to the people running the show. It was spectacularly, smoothly run.
I laugh when I see all the people in huge lines across the country.
Do these people just not have enough precincts to vote?
My husband and I will vote later this afternoon in Tracy but my daughter voted on her way to work and had no problem zipping in and out about 9 this morning. Our precinct is in an upscale subdivision so I would expect a lot of voters tonight.
As far as lines are concerned, I have voted in every election since we moved here in 1992 and never had to wait in line. I always have with me my sample ballot filled out and ready to simply copy to the official ballot. It takes all of about five minutes to vote. Perhaps other voters expect to make their decision behind the little curtains and that drags out the voting process?
There was NOBODY at my polling place in Savannah, GA.
It took about 5 minutes to vote around 1400 hrs.
2 guys standing out on the main road with BHO signs...
