I think that climate is such that very few people are willing to admit that they are red, if they might be...and even though I have lived here for over twenty years, it has gotten worse. (Don't ask why I still live here. I ask myself daily.) People are very intimidating and aggressive even in the most casual associations. It is a college/state capital town. That being said, it is also surprising how many people here are regular church/synagogue goers which suggests that there is a lot of silence if people are confronted. I know a fair number of academics and scientists who are very committed to their churches which doesn't fit the profile.
