Last week Mike Sandvick, head of the Milwaukee Police Department's five-man Special Investigative Unit, was told by superiors not to send anyone to polling places on Election Day. He was also told his unit -- which wrote the book on how fraud could subvert the vote in his hometown -- would be disbanded.
"We know what to look for," he told me, "and that scares some people." In disgust, Mr. Sandvick plans to retire. (A police spokeswoman claims the unit isn't being disbanded and that any changes to the unit "aren't significant.")
In February, Mr. Sandvick's unit released a 67-page report on what it called an "illegal organized attempt to influence the outcome of (the 2004) election in the state of Wisconsin" -- a swing state whose last two presidential races were decided by less than 12,000 votes.
The report found that between 4,600 and 5,300 more votes were counted in Milwaukee than the number of voters recorded as having cast ballots. Absentee ballots were cast by people living elsewhere; ineligible felons not only voted but worked at the polls; transient college students cast improper votes; and homeless voters possibly voted more than once.
Much of the problem resulted from Wisconsin's same-day voter law, which allows anyone to show up at the polls, register and then cast a ballot. ID requirements are minimal. If someone lacks any ID, he can vote so long as someone who lives in the same city vouches for him. The report found that in 2004 a total of 1,305 "same day" voters gave information that was declared "un-enterable" or invalid by election officials.
According to the report, this loophole was abused by many out-of-state workers for the Kerry campaign. They had "other staff members who were registered voters vouch for them by corroborating their residency."

Chicago-style politics moves into cheese country
Surely there are some decent, honest Democrats out there and maybe even somne in Congress. Why do they tolerate slack standards for registration with such crap as same day registration and voting with no picture id, etc? Maybe we can hunt down those rare birds and see if they would join forces to save their reputations.
If Wisconsin votes for crime and corruption, they will get crime and corruption.
It’s not going to be “Obama-Nation” today...
instead, given the voting irregularities, it’s gonna’ be
“Daley-Nation”
In memory of a fine tradition of Democratic-Chicago vote theft.
bump
We already have crime and corruption in Milwaukee. Wisconsin used to pride itself on being pristine, but the last two elections have exposed voter fraud. In addition, Milwaukee city and county government have been hit with pocket lining bribery that would make Mayor Daley proud.
“Surely there are some decent, honest Democrats out there “
Those Democrats are all dead. No - correct that - even DEAD Democrats are crooked - they still vote!!!
Democrats to a one all believe they almost have a “Divine Right” to office to rule lesser folk and deliver social justice. Its more like a cult than a political party.
I was in Milwaukee last week. In Bayview there were 10 Obama signs for every 1 McCain sign. All those million dollar mansions with Obama signs is enough to make a person ill and wonder wtf I just don’t get it.
You must be talking about a different Bay View - I lived there for 8 years before moving out of the city and county a year or so ago and work there still.
About a 60/40 ratio of signs in favor of Obama - much different than 2004 (before property taxes increased 50% or more in 4 years).
Tons of college grads and east side trash along with an aging 60’s “activist” set make it feel more “bohemian” than it is. It’s a typical story of the working folks not having time to engage in identity politics or pissing matches with the “progressives.”
Milwaukee still sucks and most sensible folks in the neighborhood were either taxed out, or moved out on their own in the past few years.
You’re right. I got my geography mixed up! My son lives near Bay View. He took us on a sight seeing tour up N. Lake Dr., Route 32 — Whitefish Bay area I think it’s called. That’s where we saw all the beautiful mansions with Obama signs — depressing. Thanks for the correction!
BTTT
Cheese country has always been Chicago-style politics vacation land.
