WASHINGTON (AFP) A 39-year-old Yemeni accused of being an aide to Al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden was sentenced to life in prison Monday by a military tribunal at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, a Pentagon spokesman said.
Ali Hamza Ahmad al-Bahlul, an alleged aide and media secretary to Bin Laden, was convicted Friday by a military panel of charges of conspiracy, solicitation to murder and terrorist acts, and providing material support for terrorism, said Commander Jeffrey Gordon.
It was the second trial of a "war on terror" detainee at Guantanamo Bay under a specially created system of military commissions that has been criticized by civil rights activists and lawyers as lacking full protection of defendants' rights.

Shakespeare was right - "first thing we do, let's kill all the lawyers."
I don’t get the idea of a life sentence here. Isn’t death more appropriate considering the severity and danger the individual represents.
A life sentence means that this individual will at some time down the line be transported to the United States for the remainder of his sentenced. I don’t think its in the best interests of the country for that to happen.
I’d feel better about a life sentence if there was a permanent secure island where folks that pose this much danger could be isolated, like St. Helena.
The hilarious/tragic thing with the whole Gitmo situation is that we give the terrorists 10,000 times better treatment than people in Castro’s jails. Heck, I’d rather be locked up in Gitmo than any state prison in the US.
