From the Washington Wire:

You know it’s a big day on the McCain campaign when Mark Salter is smiling.

The senior aide to John McCain, known for his gruff demeanor, was practically giddy this morning on the campaign plane. He was cracking jokes with reporters and describing an optimistic atmosphere surrounding McCain.

The whole campaign staff are giddy, they know something, i can feel it.

We all said if Obama was not 10 points clear by election time, he would lose it and well look where we are. Obama is about to be kerryied out on a stretcher.

I hope it has something to do with the election and not something like knowing that they have $5 million left in the bank that all the senior staff and consultants are gonna split.

I wonder why he is smiling?

When asked how he was planning to get through the marathon seven-state day, Salter quipped: “Crystal meth. Me, personally, that’s how I’m going to do it.”

Lol! Always good to keep one's sense of humor :)

If Obama is not 10 points up, then McCain will win? Why do you say that?

Because the McCain - Palin voters are under-represented in the polls in large numbers. Because a lot of people report that they will vote for a Black candidate when they do not. Because the pollsters have counted on a 8-10% increase of Democrat voters above the increase in Republican voters and that also is not going to happen.

Leaving aside the Bradley effect, the fashionable party (you know the one with Oprah, George Clooney, Bruce Springsteen etc.) always does better in polling than results.

Don’t forget the Brady Effect (brady bill). The NRA started backing Presidential candidates in 1980 and has won every pres candidate they have backed. They back Reagan twice, Bush 1 once (Brady bill killed the second run), No to Dole due to Brady bill, and backed Bush 2 twice.

They did not back clinton. They are spending $40 million and they have said Obama is the most dangerous Pres candidate ever and guns & ammo sales are up big.

If you’ll remember Karl Rove was giddy the day before the 2006 elections, too.

He was, do you have links to those articles from 2006?
I also think it’s easier to read the race of ONE person, then many different races across the country for seats in both houses.
You know, nobody called the major victory for the Republicans in 1992 either.

It’s also well worth considering the effect of Operation Chaos.

Many of those who crossed to vote HIllary never switched back, and have been polled as likely Dem voters.

Don’t laugh; it could be a significant aberration in the vote.

there were similar stories about Rove during the last election, take these stories with a grain of salt, Rove was claiming up until the very end that his numbers showed big Republican gains in both houses:

http://www.nytimes.com/2005/11/11/politics/11rove.html
“I’ve noticed a big difference,” said one Republican in regular contact with Mr. Rove who declined to speak for attribution because the White House did not authorize it. “There’s a spring in his step, more focus, more - something.

There were stories about Rove being the same way in 2004 as well.

Look, I think there is a moment of excitement at the end of every campaign in anticipation for what will happen...win or lose.
DON’T WORRY THOUGH..I’M NOT GETTING HOPEFUL OR ANYTHING!!

PS.

This story from The Corner isn’t just about someone’s interpenetration of whether or not McCain’s top aide was in a good mood, Salter also STATED that they were jazzed.
Whether or not McCain can get all those undecided voters they are counting on will be known tomorrow night, right?

it just struck me as an eerily similar story to the ones they were putting out about Rove in ‘06, I think that’s what NS was getting at, so don’t be surprised if you read a story on Weds about it being a head fake by Salter, all campaigns do it. Obama doesn’t really expect to win AZ either but he got McCain to spend time and money campaigning in his home state by getting the polls close.
