People forget that leaving was not an option for many. The antisemites in the State Department constantly made sure that despite demand, the number of refugees from Europe were always well below the hard quotas.

I'm well aware of that. At least some of those State Dept. bureaucrats were appointees of the great hero of all too many Jews, Franklin D. Roosevelt.

I’ve read the book. Also my godfather, Shalom Asch’s son, had some first hand stories to tell. He worked for the American Council in France, first in Paris and then Vichy. He was eventually fired for being a leak regarding the mistreatment of Jews. Right up to 1941, the sob’s at state were currying favor with the Nazis.
