Virginias U.S. Senate race between two former governors presents marked contrasts between the men in style and substance.
Even those who prefer Republican Jim Gilmores platform say they like Democrat Mark Warners persona. We agree.
How, then, to choose? Heres one way:
This years top voter concern, no surprise, is the economy. And on that measure, Mr. Gilmores principles and, yes, even his well-known stubbornness will better serve Virginia in the U.S. Senate.
Mr. Gilmores principles are strongly aligned with foundational American freedoms free enterprise, free markets, freedom to work and the right to vote freely in labor elections without intimidation.
Average working men and women must have the liberty to work as they choose and invest as they choose; this is the tried-and-true means of wealth creation. And having earned their money through effort, persistence and intelligence, they should be able to keep it or the large majority of it rather than have it confiscated by government for ineffectual programs.
Mr. Gilmore says he would have voted against the ill-conceived bailout plan that penalized hardworking taxpayers by making them pay for others greed and incompetence.
Meanwhile, if the White House goes Democratic, as some expect, a loyal opposition on Capitol Hill will be required to provide the checks and balances needed to ask questions, raise concerns and oppose the majority party. Other-wise, legislation or presidential initiatives risk being rubber-stamped, without proper vetting.
We like and respect Mark Warner, and have agreed with him on many occasions. But for this job and this crucial moment in time, The Daily Progress endorses Jim Gilmore.
If Virginia elects homeschool-hating, christian-bashing, gun-grabbing Warner to the senate then I don’t know where this crazy train will ever stop.
All I know is that regardless of what the polls show I’ve seen the GOP coming home to Gilmore. He’s been campaigning with Palin every time she comes to Virginia.
Surprisingly he has run his campaign as a real conservative- I am really pulling for Gilmore (as I formerly went to college in VA-though everytime I voted: I did it legally as in Absentee from Indiana ;)!
I find an endorsement out of Charlottesville absolutely stunning. I’m not familiar with the particular paper, but the town is more liberal than even Northern VA. So that’s great.
Up here in NOVA you can hardly find a Gilmore yard sign, even in yards that are peppered with McCain/Palin and (in my district) Fimian. I assumed it was because of lack of funding. Hope that doesn’t translate to lack of votes.
We’ll be at Interstate Van Lines in Springfield to see McCain/Gilmore/Fimian early tomorrow morning.
Who is this Gilmore fella? I can’t listen to the radio anymore because it’s wall to wall Warner ads.
BTTT
