“They’re buying self defense guns and military type guns because they feel like they’ll be the first one’s to have anti gun legislation passed on them.”

I’m 44 years old. I have never owned a gun in my life, I’m not anti-gun (spent 8 years in the Army) but never saw a reason to own one. But obama scares me and if he wins (God forbid) I think I’ll need one.

So you folks out there in-the-know about guns, What do you think would be my best choice for home defense without going overboard?

For strictly in-home defense, a 12 gauge pump shotgun from Remington, Mossberg, or Winchester fits the bill. If you want something for a little farther out, an AR-15 carbine in 5.56mm(aka M4gery) from any of the major AR manufacturers works. If you really feel the need to engage from a distance, anything in .308 (FAL, AR-10, et al)will work.

Handguns are last resort. Or to buy you time to get to a real gun.

If you want to go inexpensive, the Big 5 stores in WA state are currently running a sale on a home-defense model 12 gauge pump shotgun. It is a Norinco (Chinese) copy of a Remington 870 and is sold under the "Interstate" name.

The guns get decent reviews as good, inexpensive little shooters and they sell like crazy.

The Big 5 sale on them ends tomorrow, but they go on sale every few weeks there. Even if the store is out of the gun, they can give you a rain check and honor the sale price when the guns come in.

Elder5,

the best home defense gun is a short-barreled open-choked (18”) 12-ga pump shotgun, loaded with bird shot. Handguns require steady practice to shoot effectively, and most rifles and carbines will overpenetrate in most houses.

The sound of a Remington 870 slide being racked will usually register on whatever brain stem a criminal has and impel him to exit your house by the most expeditious means, without injuring anybody — best case outcome, that.

If you do have to fire it, the shotgun is a point and shoot weapon, terrifying even in the unlikely event you miss — it’s hard to miss with all pellets with bird shot, if you hit with any pellets you’ve increased the likelihood he’ll flee (and be caught; even Barney Fife can follow a blood trail or grab a guy in an emergency room), and if you hit with all pellets the guy will be over as a threat and probably as a living organism.

Shotguns like that are used for hunting deer in overdeveloped northeastern states that forbid rifle hunting, so they will be available even after Obama’s semi-auto ban, at least for a while.

Military style rifles will probably be banned again. In 1994, this led to an extreme escalation in prices, which reduced back out when the ban sunset.

d.o.l.
