Issue date: 10/30/08 Section: News

The GOP announced John McCain will visit Maine in the near future.

The exact time and place were not available by press time.

"He will be here before Election Day. That's all we're willing to say at this point," said Jennifer Webber, communications director of the Maine GOP. "It shows Maine is still a competitive state for John McCain."

The GOP sent a press release at 4:23 p.m. yesterday to this effect.

"He would be a great rallying point for us and hopefully offset the inherent ideas and the lack of involvement that a lot of college students are expressing," said Zachary Jackman, president of the UM College Republicans. "… It would probably help us more and get a lot more people energized. People are getting to the point now where they are getting sick of the campaigns."

The announcement came less than two weeks after Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin's visit to Bangor.

"John McCain will be in Maine before election day to talk directly to Maine voters about his plans to lower our taxes, reduce wasteful government spending and get our economy back on track. The contrast couldn't be more stark, and John McCain has real plans that will offer real help to Mainers, especially in these tough economic times," Maine Republican Party Chairman Mark Ellis said in a press release.

McCain visited South Portland in July. The campaign announced it would invest more resources in Maine. This is because the state splits its electoral votes.

More information will be posted on mainecampus.com as it becomes available.

With all due respect there are much bigger prizes in play and some big EV states McCain has to hold. Is this really worth the investment of time?

Electoral strategy...if he splits Maine it will mean that Obama will HAVE to have Nevada or Colorado no questions asked.

Obama is a terrible closer...just remember the primaries...Hillary buried him...but then again she really won Florida and Michigan and he doesn’t belong where he is anyway.

I guess they think the 2nd congressional district’s electoral vote is winnable. Damn, will it be so close such that it might be needed?

Yea maybe they are I just saw a P.U.M.A guy on Gretta saying that his friends in OHIO knows that Ohio is going to McCain. Their is McCain signs every where and very few signs for OBAMA also he thought that between 2-4 million Hillary voters were going for McCain/Sarah.

Wow...that proportional elector is really drawing some attention for ME.

Apparently ME is an economic basket case though, McPalin was EXTREMELY competitive in Maine until the Stock Market bottomed in early October, he was down 3% or so until that happened.

Obama has to get Nevada or Colorado even if Maine doesn’t split.

If it is 270-268, George Soros may try to bribe a McCain elector to switch.

LOL. I guess so. He has information you don’t. The way Maine allocates its electoral votes, McCain may be able to pick up at least one and possibly two EVs.

If McCain wins the 2nd CD in Maine (and NH) it ensures that Obama NEEDS Colorado or Virginia. Nevada won’t cut it.
