Yesterday a priest I used to work with sent me an e-mail with an article from a catholic professor Kmieck (sp?). The theme was: vote for Obama because through his social justice initiative, he was going to reduce abortions. Therefore: it's moral for catholics to vote for Obama.

I asked poster Salvation if he could provide me some info. He gave me a link to an article by Archbishop Chaput denouncing everything the priest had sent me.

There are some catholics deluding themselves into thinking the church's position is not what it is. The first red-flag is when you get an e-mail saying how pro-life Obama is.

Here is a link Salvation’s post where she lists just about every bishop who has spoken about this:

Salvation also has a list of threads, but I can’t find it.

If Professor Kmiec and his cohorts want to embrace Obama because they endorse his left-wing social and economic policies, they should just say so. But it is just the height of dishonesty and bad faith to pretend that someone is pro-life who wants to pass the Freedom of Choice Act (eliminating any restrcitions on abortion the courts have allowed even under Roe v. Wade) as their first priority in office, who supports public funding of abortion, who voted against requiring medical support for infants born alive after botched abortions, who voted against partial birth abortion ban, etc. They argue that helping the poor would reduce the incidence of abortions? I’m not sure exactly how that would work, but I question even the premise — the poor are better off when the economy is growing, but Obama doesn’t give a fig about economic growth. He just wants to soak the rich and spread the wealth around.
