Republican Senator Ted Stevens has fallen eight points behind Democrat Mark Begich in his bid for re-election, and most Alaska voters now believe Stevens should resign from office.

The latest Rasmussen Reports survey of Alaska voters, conducted a day after Stevens was found guilty of filing false financial disclosure forms, finds that 52% plan to vote for Begich while 44% support Stevens. Alaskan Independence Party candidate Bob Bird picks up three percent (3%) of the vote while two percent (2%) remain undecided.

Stevens has just been convicted of 7 felonies, and Begich can manage only a 7 point lead?

This seat can be saved...

Stevens needs to announce that if re-elected, he will stand down and allow a special election to take place (Senate vacancies are determined by special election in Alaska).

This would require a selfless act on the part of Steven.. not sure he’s got that in him.

Blame it on stupid Alaska GOP primary voters for picking the corruption tarred Stevens as their Senate candidate. That's why the Democrats will now pick up a seat the GOP should by all rights, hold.

I amaze that nothing is happening on this...is the GOP ready to just “give up” a reliable Republican Senate seat?

So we just substitute in another candidate, just like the Dems did in NJ when “The Torch” went down. The precedent’s been set. What do you mean the Republicans don’t have the juevos to do that?

I'd vote for Begich in Alaska because the GOP didn't clean house when they could have nominated a clean candidate to hold the seat. Stevens is a symbol of all that's wrong with the national party as well as the Alaska GOP.

I wonder if Begeich will vote as if he wanted a second term in mind or will he just toe the party line despite the sentiments of home voters?

Punishing the Alaska GOP punishes us all.

I hear what you’re saying but I still couldn’t pull the lever for a Dem.

I simply wouldn’t vote in that race.

Well Thank God for that. Sheesh. Like we want that crook to win. Palin and McCain hope he loses or at least leaves office today.

“Stevens needs to announce that if re-elected, he will stand down and allow a special election to take place”

Announcing after he’s just been handed 7 convictions that he’s going to commit electoral fraud probably wouldnt help him, or us.

Like I said, this summer AK GOP primary voters could have picked a fresh face. They chose Stevens. So yeah - live and learn when the Democrats get in because the GOP was too timid to tell Stevens to retire for the party's good.

For me, its about personal character. You commit a crime, you don't deserve to be in office. I put country ahead of party.

I wish Palin would release a statement endorsing a clean and reliably conservative Republican as a write in alternative to Stevens. her endorsement could make a write in campaign feasible. Ted Stevens is a disgrace to the Senate, Alaska and the USA. He needs to be shown the door and publicly told he’s no longer welcome to represent the Great State of Alaska.

Senate races could be catastrophic. If Repubs are down to 39 seats they won’t be taking back a majority for many years. We can only hope Dole, Coleman, Chambliss, and Smith can squeak through so they have 42 or 43 seats.

Never underestimate the stupidity of the American people I guess.

I've nothing good to say about the Senate GOP. If they go below 40 - good riddance. They've shown no reason why they deserve to retain a strong presence. Don't make me laugh calling them a principled opposition.

That’s what I was thinking. There should be a way for him to hand this over to an honest Republican, so we don’t lose the Senate seat.

I can’t say much good about the senate GOP either, but I can say that the senate democrats are much, much worse.
