Jerusalem (CNSNews.com) A Palestinian student in the Gaza Strip is spending his nights making phone calls to the United States, urging Americans to vote for Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama, according to Palestinian media.
Twenty-three-year-old Ibrahim Abu Jayyab sits by the computer in the Nusairat refugee camp [in the Gaza Strip], trying to call American citizens in order to convince them to vote for the Democratic candidate for president, Barack Obama, the Palestinian Authority daily Al-Hayat Al Jadida reported this week.
According to the paper, most Palestinians feel hatred toward the U.S., whose administrations have always stood by Israel.
Abu Jayyab, a media studies student, uses the Internet to make free calls to the U.S. We dial random numbers and try to call people without knowing their identity or their affiliation, he was quoted as saying, according to a translation provided by the Palestinian Media Watch, an independent Israeli research organization.
Abu Jayyab, who works with 17 of his friends at a small Internet café in the Gaza Strip, said his pro-Obama campaigning started during the primaries after he studied Obamas stand on the issues, Al Jazeera television quoted him as saying. He said he thought Obama had the potential to bring change to the Middle East.
In an earlier interview with the Gaza-based Ramattan News Agency, Abu Jayyab said he hoped that Obama would help the Palestinians achieve what the world could not, to help us to live in peace and to achieve our dreams.
Many Palestinians dont like Abu Jayyabs campaign activity because they dont see any difference between American politicians, he said. But he told Al Hayat Al Jadida that he hoped his activity would have would be a support to the Obama campaign.
It is not the only support Obama has received from Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.
Two Palestinian brothers purchased $33,000 worth of T-shirts from the campaigns online store earlier this year. Because it was a bulk order it was considered a donation. They had listed their address as Ga, which the campaign thought meant Georgia instead of Gaza. The money reportedly was returned.
Obama already has distanced himself from an earlier endorsement by a Hamas official.
Joanne Yaron, chairwoman for Democrats Abroad in Israel, said she though it was lovely that Palestinians in Gaza were campaigning for Obama.
Yaron told CNSNews.com there are a lot of members of Democrats Abroad who live in the West Bank city of Ramallah. Why not? Its perfectly respectable. There is nothing illegal about Palestinian Americans or Palestinians having an opinion [on the candidates], Yaron said.
Not to bash jews but sometimes you get what you deserve.
Too many Jews Roosevelt was the greatest yet he denied a ship of jews to land here and they were send back to Germany and killed after being mock.
Will Dorito woman be celebrating again if Obama is elected?
While McCain/Palin get support from strip malls.
