A parolee who registered voters for the ACORN group in Detroit was bound over for trial Monday on six counts of forging applications for two Jackson women.
Antonio Johnson, 23, worked for the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now in May and June, shortly after he was released from prison on drunk-driving convictions.
Jackson police investigated Johnson after City Clerk Lynn Fessel said her office flagged six voter registration applications for two people who already were registered.
Both women testified Monday they did not fill out or sign the forms Johnson submitted, and did not give him permission to do so.
Johnson took the stand against the advice of defense attorney Phillip Berkemeier. He said the women were lying.
"I never got paid by the signature, but by the hour," Johnson testified. "I'd call them, they'd tell me things and I'd fill it out."
He knows both of the Jackson women and had a son with one of them, he said.
Johnson filled out and signed the forms on two days in May and one day in June. He said that, in each case, his supervisor said the forms needed Social Security or state identification numbers.
"As far as I knew, they were not complete or even valid," he testified. He said someone at ACORN made the mistake of filing the applications.
Johnson said he was trained for two hours and worked out of the ACORN office in Detroit. He said there were no daily quotas, and some days he gathered just a few applications.
Assistant Attorney General Oronde Patterson, prosecuting the case for Attorney General Mike Cox, asked Johnson if ACORN officials allowed him to sign applications for others.
Johnson said he understood he could fill out and sign forms for blind people, those who could not write, friends and family members.
Was he instructed to do so? Patterson asked.
"I wasn't specifically told no," Johnson said. He was fired in mid-summer.
No ACORN officials testified. District Judge Joseph Filip remarked he would like to hear the official stand on workers filling out and signing voter registrations.
ACORN is under scrutiny across the nation for irregularities involving thousands of voter registrations. Officials in the Michigan office could not be reached Monday. Earlier, an official said that when employees are found cheating, they are fired.
Filip said Johnson will be arraigned in Jackson County Circuit Court next Tuesday, Election Day.
"It seemed like an appropriate date," Filip said.
Antonio Johnson is a scapegoat. There are many people at ACORN who have forged signatures. They should all be on trial and ACORN should have to pay the court costs and the costs associated with registering all their false voters. Then, is anybody else severely chapped that ACORN received government money? This fraud of an organization needs to lose their tax funding.
YUP! In Ohio, Obama and/or ACORN workers were allowed to "withdraw" votes they had fraudulently cast. Not just registrations, but actual votes...........but it's OK.........they apologized.
