Wilson was the first socialist President. FDR was a socialist, too. I didn't know until recently how close the government came to following the fascist model in the 1930s. Apparently, a lot of FDR's close advisors really pushed for it, and liked what Mussolini did in Italy. Luckily, one of the few things you can credit FDR with is a desire not to completely overthrow the US Constitution. (He didn't mind, however, twisting it into a pretzel.)

Truman was not a socialist. Kennedy was not a socialist. LBJ was not a socialist in his core beliefs, but he implemented a socialist policy in a desperate effort to be loved. Carter was a socialist. Clinton was a socialist, but after 2 disastrous years, turned pragmatic.

With Obama, we will have a full-blown marxist at the helm. Not a Dem on the liberal side, but a true believing "spread the wealth", "redistributive" marxist. Not just that, but he has the authoritarian streak that the Democratic socialists who preceded him did not have. He is not a fan of free speech, religion, guns, white people and big business. We are in for a rough ride, if this guy wins. Fight.

In reading history of time, we were much closer than you think. And FDR was more a communist (international socialist) than a fascist.
