Now is the time for the cold water of reality to awaken many of us up from a slumber that numbs our ability to act like faithful Catholic citizens. The bishops are calling for faithfulness to the Church, joined by the thundering voices of priests, deacons and pastors across the country. Are we willing for change to take place at the expense of our human freedoms our freedom to worship and live in accordance with the tenets of our faith? Are we willing for change to take place at the expense of generations children of our future who will experience a continuing holocaust within the womb?

I and others have been saying the same thing a long time now. Sadly Americans don’t want to feel the heat. Tragic.
But alas, most of us decided on the lesser of two evils. We all so feared that the democrats would put one or two more judges on the Supreme Court that we allowed politicians into office who do not reflect our values.
Their bad example will only make it more difficult for us to come back out of whatever hell we are careening towards.
This simply cannot make the Obama folks happy - having the official voice of the largest religion in America come out against you. I guess that such would constitute a “bad day,” especially in conjunction with the release of that 2001 radio interview.
Here’s to hoping that Catholics, Protestants, Jews and all others of any religion (or none) that care about traditional values hand Mr. Obama a very bad day next Tuesday.
America is falling asleep to a lullaby of change

Saw a great bumper sticker....
CUBA GOT “CHANGE” IN 1959
I am almost to the point that rather than moving slowly, let's push for it 100% as quickly as possible.
Maybe that way, we will live to see the collapse and get to participate in the rebuilding.
I heard Obama on the news saying there’s only a matter of days before we ‘change America’.
Frighteningly put. Does this not ring a bell of warning to the public?
I must respectfully disagree. When the lamp of Freedom is extinguished, it takes a lot longer than 2 or 3 election cycles to be rekindled. Ask the Russian people. My grandfather ran from the Communists in 1923 and found refuge here. It took 75 years for the bastards to be overthrown, after they murdered tens of millions and ruined many nations. Lefties DON'T give up power easily - and this crew vowed after 1994 that once regained, they'd never let it be taken away again. I take them at their word, because they love nothing so much as power.
If we allow the Greater Evil to win in this election, the Fairness Doctrine will be reasserted within a month or two, shutting down the principal voice of the opposition. A domestic terrorism incident will either occur of its own accord, or will be faked, in order to create an "emergency" under which The One will be given extraordinary powers. Don't worry - it'll only be temporary, until the Attorney General certifies that the emergency has passed. Under those powers, plus others in the Patriot Act and those enacted in the mid-'70's, the AG will name domestic terrorists and suspected domestic terrorists, and tens or hundreds of thousands will be rounded up. They will destroy this nation as we know it, and getting power back from them will be nearly impossible.
You can compare this situation to a drunk driving a car full of innocent people. Your recipe seems to state that if the driver veers into the oncoming lane and an 18-wheeler is approaching, keep lecturing the idiot for his continued failure to control himself. My recipe calls for grabbing the wheel, swerving back into the correct lane, and kicking the drunk out of the driver's seat once we get the car stopped (i.e. letting him stay there for a brief time). I and my passengers survive the crisis, you and yours don't - but, you didn't compromise with evil, so I guess you guys are better off.
The Democrats are liberals. They are not communists, socialists, or even dyed in the wool leftists. Most of the Democrats in the farm belt and in the rust belt will not put up with the ecofacists or LBGT group any longer than Republicans will.
Second, although when I was younger and dumber I believed in one or two conspiracy theories, I am absolutely convinced after what just happened financially that there is absolutely noone at the wheel or in charge of anything. I am more worried now about general incompetence than I am in bad political ideology. Right now I would be tempted to vote for a cross-dressing Teamster so long has he/she is capable of balancing a budget.
Finally, your analogy is way off. Being Americans we are not all in the same car. Getting all Americans going in the same direction is probably not quite as easy as herding 1,000,000 cats.
The current "driver" of this supposed car is George Bush. He was the one that put into place all of the wonderful little things such as the Patriot Act that you are rightfully afraid may be equally abused by a future Obama administration.
The current "driver" has already driven our car off a cliff. McCain is basically saying that he will apply the breaks and hope that that will prevent us from crashing to the ground.
As conservatives we have heard this boiling frog analogy dozens, if not hundreds, of times. We all believe that it is a clear description of the situation we are in. And yet, most of us argue that it is best to fight with the liberals over how high to turn up the heat rather than letting the liberals turn it up all the way in hopes that the frog will jump up in time to save itself.
Voting McCain is voting to keep the range set on "Simmer". Letting Obama in is letting the liberals set the range to "High" and then hoping and praying that the American people will finally wake up.
They may not, but if they don't then that is their choice.
Why should we continue to live reasonably safe and moderately contented lives in the relatively nice parts of the sewer that America is becoming? Why is it not time to allow Americans to face the choice of everything going into the sewer or everything rising out and landing back on top as a Shining City on a Hill?
And how many will be voting for Obama, because he is change.
The Democrats are liberals. They are not communists, socialists, or even dyed in the wool leftists. Most of the Democrats in the farm belt and in the rust belt will not put up with the ecofacists or LBGT group any longer than Republicans will.
In the 1960's - 1980's people were (Bill Ayers and the like notwithstanding) far more restrained and generally more moral. The WW2 generation was still mostly alive, and in the early part of that era was at the peak of its powers. These people loved their country. I cannot say the same for people who worship at the alter of Obama, the guy who is on tape stating that the Constitution must be massively modified to provide for government obligations to us (i.e. positive commandments, instead of negative restrictions). Now the WW2 generation is mostly gone, their experiences and values with them. What restrains these people now?
Dems are liberals? Yes, most of them. But the elite, the people that will be the POTUS, his advisors and his cabinet are not - they are haters of this country and its ideals. I don't trust that they'll be restrained by the Constitution that they don't respect, not after all of the ACORN voter fraud, the campaign finance fraud, voter intimidation, etc. Let him get in, and you'll have the Fairness Doctrine in place quickly, so as to silence the opposition. Combine that with major ACORN players (or sympathizers) in place at the FEC and Justice Dept., and you'll never have anything even approaching a fair election again. Say goodbye to the 2nd Amendment (to be dealt a death by a thousand cuts of "reasonable restrictions" and a compliant judiciary). So now the 1st and 2nd will have been gutted - all to the advantage of Obama and his ilk.
Sometimes, just sometimes, the worst comes about. Look at what happened to Russia and Germany within the last century - how many people REALLY expected the brutality, the barbarism of the Communist or Nazi regimes? Did those parties promise brutality and enslavement, or a better world, more social justice, etc., etc.? You know the answer. Yet the worst happened, because that is human nature. What you don't understand (or, if you do, what you don't say) is that our experience in this country in the last 2 1/3 centuries has (for the most part) been unique. The world is not a kind place, and just because this is America doesn't mean that we can't fall victim to the same kind of problems that have plagued the majority of humanity throughout history, even to this very day.
We have an opportunity to stop a disaster, to buy time to educate our fellow citizens. Yet, you'd rather dive head-first down the steepest part of the slippery slope, in the hope that somehow or other the public will magically wake up. Sorry, but that is naive. I'd rather preserve as much of what we have as possible - because recovery is easier when most of the infrastructure is intact. You're dealing with people that will gleefully take apart the infrastructure and create a new one, one that will prevent the re-emergence of the old system.
I think you well-intentioned, but somewhat naive. My family suffered from both the Communists and the Nazis, and I long ago discarded my rose-colored glasses. Maybe that makes me a bit "paranoid," but my family's history and all of human history say that this "paranoia" is really jsut the eternal vigilance of which the Founders spoke.
It used to be that we had a choice: Democrats leading us toward mimicking Western Europe, and Republicans leading us toward mimicking the Roosevelt Progressives.
This was bad enough, but tolerable.
Maybe I am naive, but I believe that the Leviathan version of socialism has failed, and the vast majority of thinking people around the world agree. The problem that we are having and will continue to have is with the Liliputian version of socialism: the ever-increasing web of taxes, tax incentives, rebates, regulations, penalties, etc. that will be inflicted on us until we are left as demoralized as the Swedes.
But even the Swedes have not completely given up. Even in the heart of nanny-state mania there are regular moves to the right.
But also, I hate to say it, but I am almost as afraid of the Republicans as I am of the Democrats with regard to some more sinister future. The world has lost tens of trillions of dollars of wealth (probably more imaginary than real) while the so-called party of "big business" was at the helm. I realize that the whole thing got started with the CRA, etc. but CDS's and MBS's represented oiltanker's full of gasoline that was poured onto the flames.
I also don't agree with the Patriot Act or the War in Iraq. Call me naive, but I believe that it would have been a far cheaper policy to apply the money we have spent in Iraq towards modernizing our border/cargo inspections and investing in the few countries that are themselves struggling for true democracy, rather than those who prefer fighting amongst themselves for oil.
The last eight years have put us into a situation where we now have lots of enemies and a lot less wealth with which to fight them off. Bush's comments (echoed daily on FR) regarding the almost endless nature of the war on terrorism are eerily similar to the words of the leaders in "1984". The regular character assassinations of everybody to the left of Rush Limbaugh are also eerily similar to the Hate Sessions discussed in 1984.
I was around in 1984 when the liberals tried to use that as a weapon against the Reagan administration. The charge made no sense back then, but it seems all to applicable to the Bush administration.
