Almost every reputable economist agrees that it would be catastrophic to add to the economy's woes by raising the capital gains tax. But Obama is on record as favoring an increase from 15% to 20% and suggested during the primaries that he would consider hitting 28%.

Americans are too stupid to even remotely understand the issue of capital gains taxes on the economy. This one would just be pounded right back up McCain's butt as "tax breaks for the rich", and the "MSM" would lead the charge.

Warn voters of impending socialism in America.

Americans are too stupid to understand the difference between capitalism and socialism, and half the Republican Party is socialists anyway (witness "compassionate conservatism", "New Tone", Medicare drug plan that was passed with the assistance of Republicans, and all the outrageous spending that was done over the six years that Bush was President).

So is McCain. Did you see him this morning promoting his mortgage bailout plan? He wants the government to bailout irresponsible home owners using the tax dollars of home owners who pay their mortgage on time. No matter how you spin it, that's socialism.

I think you're right.

Better to emphasize that Obama wants to raise the overall tax burden, and that it won't help the offshoring and jobs-drain problem if The One jacks up payroll taxes as promised.

Against a backdrop of accelerating layoff announcements, that one ought to get people's attention and start focusing them on the practical consequences of Europeanizing employment costs at the worst possible moment.
