They operated under an extended grant from Queen Victoria, who gave them the right to continue the slave trade in exchange for helping the British defeat the Madhi Army in southern Sudan and the Upper Nile region. Funny how circular is history; now the British again face the Madhi Army, albeit this time Shiite, not Sunni, as in nineteenth century Sudan.
The Mahdist regime was destroyed in Sudan in 1898. The idea that a British government would issue a "license" to trade slaves in 1898 is utterly ludicrous and false.
The British abolished the slave trade everywhere they were in control in 1807, and slavery itself in 1831. Throughout the 19th century they had an exemplary record of opposing slavers, even invading and conquering several nations who resisted their pressure to stop the slave trade.
