If you watch those old shows, liberal themes appear quite frequently. They were more subtle in those days, but many episodes were about Andy or someone on the series growing as a person by learning some kind of tolerance for an outsider of various kinds, or that their sexism was wrong, or their country superstitions (read:religion) was outdated and silly, or that they needed more compassion to the poor.

Watching that is like watching the first baby steps of the full blown propaganda machine for the social revolution that we have on TV every single night.

We know Gomer was gay; I have my suspicions about just about all the males on that show. None of them were portrayed as married, with a loving self-confident wife in the home caring for a houseful of kids. It was the first of the shows that had some kind of dysfunctionality in the home.
