In his e-mail to his church members he writes: "For 5,000 years, every culture and every religion - not just Christianity - has defined marriage as a contract between men and women, Warren wrote. There is no reason to change the universal, historical definition of marriage to appease 2% of our population.
On the Saddleback site there is video of him discussing the issue, here.
Let's hope this passes in California, and maybe give McCain a boost in the Golden State, too. (I can dream, can't I?)
Good for Rick!
There was a woman on the Bill O’Reilly show tonight saying how many large corporations such as Comcast and AT&T have donated $$$$ to defeated this amendment.
I am glad he is making this stand.
Thank you, Rick Warren!
Homosexual marriage is not about the freedom for some to live as they want—because they are now free to do that-—but it is about forcing an ideology on people who do not want it.
Is is about the government forcing people to live AGAINST their consciences!
It is a matter of taking away the rights of the majority of people, to secure a privilege for a small minority of people, who can secure that their partnership by other means.
It is a matter of destroying the right of religions——not just Christianity by the way-—to teach morality in the way they see fit-—the right of freedom of speech, for people to speak out on issues they hold dear to their hearts-—and Parental rights-—the right to raise your children to share your own morals and values.
It is a matter of taking away the freedom of Americans to think, feel and define their own morality, and define their own communities, their own government; ON the grounds that the GOVERNMENT will now define the doctrines and precepts of religious organizations.
Homosexual marriage gives the government the right to intrude their powers in the area of anciently held and practiced religious doctrines—and to restrain these doctrines, destroys all religious liberty!
Good to see Rick Warren take a stand. I wonder how he will react when he is no longer the media’s favorite Evangelical preacher.
Driving around CA I see lots of yes on 8 signs, and very few no on 8. Prop 8 will pass easily. Gay marriage is over in CA.
Hopefully he used some biblical reasons to support this. If it were 52% I hope he wouldn’t be supporting it.
Bravo, Mr. Warren.
I’m usually a critic of Rick Warren, but you have to give him credit for this, and for the first (and best) debate.
Except with islam, it can be 1 man and many women...(interesting phrasing of his words...almost clintonian)
“Yes” means No to Gay Marriage and “No” means Yes on this proposition. No wonder California is so screwed up!
I’m using the “Bradley Effect” on this one. I tell everyone that I’m voting No, but I’m really voting “Yes” (against gay marriage..)
Extremely well put!!!!! Thanks for putting your thougths into words.
“Driving around CA I see lots of yes on 8 signs, and very few no on 8. Prop 8 will pass easily. Gay marriage is over in CA.”
I saw a bunch of Hispanics with signs saying Yes on Prop. 8 at a busy intersection on the way home last night. I wasn’t counting, but it had to be at least 15+ people.
I haven’t seen a single “No” sign or even received any mailers (I’m an Independent).
I think the “No’s” are relying on the Internet, word-of-mouth and the Hollywood crowd.
The way I see it, the case for Optimism in this Election is found in Prop 8, and in Murtha perchance losing and Mrs. Bachmann stepping up and taking an unpopular stand in the media as well as the Maine “no” to a tax increase as well as the MA abolishment of the State Income Tax ballot initiative.
And of course Sarah Palin on the ticket, we have some brightness to work for unlike in 2006.
And good for Rick Warren, for my .02 cents, he did the best job of handling any form of debate this election season.
I’m in worse shape than you...I live deep in the belly of the beast. Hollywood. NO on prop 8 is within a 5 mile radius.
He did the best of all the debates.
Yay Rick. I love that part about the 2% of the population, too.
Wow, he does realize there are some moral absolutes.
