“OCT 24 I find it ironic that Cardinal Rigali cites the willingness of the Catholic Church in America to teach its sons and daughters to fight and kill for U.S. national interest in an essay on the Church’s duty to teach respect for life.”
The Church has ALWAYS supported the concept of a “Just War” and the taking of an innocent and unborn human life in no way is equivalent with the actions of a soldier engaged in a legitimate war.
This is a great piece and I hope very Catholic in the Country reads it - also every non-Catholic who believes in the sanctity of innocent human life.

And just when is the Church hierarchy going to start public excommunications of Catholic politicians who favor abortion? Hmmm? When the Cardinal actually does something about his beliefs I’ll take him seriously, and not before. Words are not doing something by my definition btw. Also, if he was for real, this would have been done some time ago, and not just before an election. This stinks of casuistry.

Leviticus 18
21 And thou shalt not let any of thy seed pass through the fire to Molech, neither shalt thou profane the name of thy God: I am the LORD.
Leviticus 20
2 Again, thou shalt say to the children of Israel, Whosoever he be of the children of Israel, or of the strangers that sojourn in Israel, that giveth any of his seed unto Molech; he shall surely be put to death: the people of the land shall stone him with stones.
Leviticus 20
3 And I will set my face against that man, and will cut him off from among his people; because he hath given of his seed unto Molech, to defile my sanctuary, and to profane my holy name.
4 And if the people of the land do any ways hide their eyes from the man, when he giveth of his seed unto Molech, and kill him not:
5 Then I will set my face against that man, and against his family, and will cut him off, and all that go a whoring after him, to commit whoredom with Molech, from among their people.
Deuteronomy 18
10 There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch.

McCain can stand every bit of help. That said, I don’t have particularly high hopes for a McCain administration - lesser of two evils kind of thing YMMV.

{Last updated on September 10th.}
Notes:
-
Previous #23 has been removed. Bishop Joseph Gossman of Raleigh, NC is actually the bishop emeritus, and the new bishop, Michael Burbidge has not, to my knowledge, made a personal statement.
-
Previous #16 has also been removed, it was an erroneous duplication of current #13.
-
#26 was added September 10th, although he published his column September 6th
