Months later, the problem of Internet addiction in China became a personal problem for me when my apartment was robbed. The police determined that the camera I lost (with 500 photos from a recent trip to Chengdu), as well as a computer and a Gerber knife had probably been pawned by local schoolboys to fund their Internet game addictions. Two weeks later, I caught two of them climbing over a wall and sneaking into my apartment building. I chased them halfway down the street in dress shoes before I finally gave up...

Is the problem escapism (something to block out the landscape, future, oppression) around them? Or is it more peer pressure to goof off, walk on the wild side, and play games?

I am going to have to disagree. I think the Chinese government is making a mountain out of a molehill. The Party is just pushing the buttons of ordinary Chinese - the whole anti Net addiction campaign is a subtle reminder of the Anglo-Chinese Wars and their supposed infliction of great suffering upon the Chinese people. I estimate that in the wealthy coastal areas, there is one Internet cafe seat for every 100 people. And the seats aren’t always filled to capacity - you obviously got in without having to wait.
