WASHINGTON, Oct 23 (Reuters) - The United States will miss its deadline to complete a security fence along the Mexican border this year, Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff said on Thursday.
"I don't think we're going to hit the nail on the head and be done by the end of the year," Chertoff told Reuters, adding that about 370 miles (595 km) of the planned 670-mile (1,070-km) fence had been completed.
Chertoff said he hoped when the Bush administration leaves office in January about 90 to 95 percent of the fence -- a controversial measure that has raised hackles both with Mexico and with U.S. landowners along the proposed route -- would be completed or under construction.
"We've gotten most of the way there. We will be very substantially close," he told Reuters in an interview.
Congress has mandated that the fence, which will eventually stretch from California to Texas to help stem the tide of illegal immigration, be finished this year but law suits have slowed its progress.
Big shock. Doesn’t matter, anyway. The next prez is guaranteed to approve amnesty and let the flood continue.
“a controversial measure”
Nothing controversial about it Al Reuters.
Me too.
hmmmmm. I wonder if they were lying when they told us they'd build it in the first place.
Naaaaahhhhh!
That is old fence, not new fence. What happened to this guey once he got over?
It’s probably a waste of time. The Obamacorns are going to tear it down anyway.
Another broken Bush promise . . .
I’m shocked!
“The United States will miss its deadline”,
That’s right MR. Chertoff.
It will not scan ALL imports by 2010.
It will not have a border fence by 2010 either. WHY?
Dammit it is your job to get these few things accomplished and you can’t do even that?
FOOL.
If that be true then the next president should be imprisoned, hung, impeached, or neutered.
What’s with the “or”?
Apparently not enough Obama voters and U.S. bank mortgage holders have crossed yet.
or
Maybe we are just giving them an opening to get back to Mexico when they default on their mortgages and our economy is all dried up.
They moderators and feds get excited if ya say the bastard should be killed.

Building a nuclear reactor or drilling in ANWR should also be straightforward. Unfortunately, the enemy has a habit of getting in the way, gumming up the works and generally delaying the whole operation. Can you say snail darter?
On the plus side, a lot of illegal entry is based in Mexican media encouragement, or the lack thereof. Right now, there is a lot of negative press, so fewer people try in the first place.
On top of that, the bloody drug war going on in North Mexico, is scaring away a lot of potential crossers. With 3500 or so dead this year, and the use of automatic weapons, hand grenades, and al-Qaeda levels of violence, it’s no surprise.
Quick, grab yer paintball gun!
