Being a US citizen isn’t disputed here as in Senator Obama’s case. All the same, there’s a subjective quality to what the Panama Canal Zone was. Senator McCain would be the first one to test this idea of what is a “natural born citizen” beyond the 50 states and DC. Point.

Barry Goldwater was born in Arizona when it was still a U.S. territory. No one seriously challenged his eligibility to run for President. George Romney (Mitt's father) was born in Canada (to two U.S. citizens) and no one raised the citizenship issue when he ran for the Republican nomination. You are either a natural-born U.S. citizen (by soil or by blood) or you are a naturalized U.S. citizen.
