WASHINGTON (AFP) – A potent greenhouse gas many thousands of times more effective at warming the world's atmosphere than carbon dioxide (CO2) is four times more prevalent than previously thought, according to a study released Thursday.
Researchers using a new NASA-funded measurement network discovered there was 4,200 metric tons of the gas nitrogen trifluoride in the atmosphere in 2006, not 1,200 tons as previously estimated for that year.
In 2008 there are 5,400 metric tons of the gas in the atmosphere, an average of an 11 percent tonnage increase per year, said Ray Weiss, head of the research team from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in La Jolla, California.
Nitrogen trifluoride, which could not be detected in the atmosphere using previous techniques, is 17,000 times more potent as a global warming agent than a similar mass of CO2.
Emissions of nitrogen trifluoride, which is one of several gases used during the manufacture of liquid crystal flat-panel TV displays and electronic microcircuits, were previously considered so low that the gas was not thought to be a significant potential contributor to global warming.
As such the gas was not covered by the Kyoto Protocol, the 1997 agreement to reduce greenhouse gas emissions signed by 182 countries, but not by some industrialized nations including the United States.
"Accurately measuring small amounts of nitrogen trifluoride in air has proven to be a very difficult experimental problem, and we are very pleased to have succeeded in this effort," Weiss said.

YOu know they will use every chemical or even invent new ones until they get their way. Lies have never been a problem to science - that is politically based.
OMG...5400 tons in an atmosphere that weighs 4.4 million billion tons.
I’m not sure what they measured this with , the article mentions using Nasa funded stuff,, I would suspect they used some pretty sophisticated equipment to reach this conclusion.

GW believers hate those little details...like manmade CO2 is about .016% of the atmosphere.
Now that it’s becoming clear that the CO2 argument is crap, they have to invent something else. The fact is, however, that the most potent greenhouse gas and the one in highest concentration is good old WATER VAPOR. It’s because of water vapor that the planet is livable. Let’s see them call H2O
a pollutant.
If it were 17,000 times more potent than CO2, it would only produce 0.01% as much greenhouse warming as CO2.

Incidentally, NF3's primary use seems to be in semiconductor fabrication ... now wasn't upstate NY slapping high fives over a new fab coming to town? Sounds like this story is in prep for the environmental impact study.

Good call...I wouldn't doubt it a bit. The same was done with a study about six months ago about contamination of the water system with various chemicals measured in parts per trillion.

The AP released a "six month study" of pollutants in drinking water about four weeks ago that mentioned concentrations in parts per billion and even more intriguing, parts per trillion. I immediately recognized that this was an environmental nazi hit job. It was followed up by the local newspapers by interviewing local water commissioners, and was then followed by a poll showing drinking water pollution being the number one environmental concern. I tracked down the source of the study, and lo and behold, it is the Environmental Working Group. The are the same ones that brought us the pesticides in baby food scare, and the whatever in women's cosmetic scare, PCB's in Salmon scare...etc.

I figured it was just the normal disinformation done by the envirowhackos, but something happened today that made me write to you.....Senator Feingold wants to drop the word "navigable" from the Clean Water Act giving the Feds control over every pond, stream, seep, rivulet, and puddle in the US and the quality of drinking water was mentioned as a reason for changing the language.
Bingo!!! This campaign was so well choreographed it is scary. Maybe you could take this info and expose the people behind it and keep small concentrations of water in the hands of the people that own the property.
